@socketwench@masto.hackers.town we need to produce new things and deprecate the old right away, and then pay people to fix the new thing and make it behave like the old one, thats how you created value !

It's less that atom/RSS is "dead", and more that its "done".

The protocol is finished. It works well. It's stable and unremarkable as opposed to trendy.

      And to capitalists, that's "dead".

Nothing to hype, no wealth to extract.

@socketwench There's a lot to be said for something that is simply "Feature Complete."

@socketwench It's the bedrock of so much of the remaining "good" internet. I use it every day.

@socketwench The great insight I got from reading Cory Doctorow is that companies are not interesting in providing a stable revenue-generating service. They are interested in growth. Which means anything that simply works well is of no use to them.

@socketwench I read someone's criticism of atom/RSS was "but I can't do analytics on my viewers!"

              like, yeah

RSS was beautiful 25 years ago and is still beautiful today.

@socketwench We need more „boring“ tech in our life. Stuff that just works. Where we figured out a good solution to a requirement and can carry on. Like loo rolls and plumbing.

@socketwench Once Google works out how to inject ads into a RSS feed they'll bring back Reader.

@socketwench @jaggi And the Glass UI is, for lack of a better term... YUCK.

I know it wasn't perfect either, but at least Aqua was visually pleasing and worked very well for what it was. For that I'd much rather stick to the older macOS versions if I needed a Mac for anything.
