    Hey @EUCommission have you considered just like, buying Mozilla and making Firefox the sovereign EU browser?

    Or even just funding a non-profit to maintain an EU fork which does things like respect EU laws and regulations

    Think about it

      @eniko @EUCommission Oh btw @servo is kind of that, it's based entirely in the EU and is supported by the Linux Foundation, it's made from the ground-up in Rust, no other browser engine!

          @eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu It would need to be some independent entity. Otherwise they will build age verification and scanning into the browser accidentally. The barrier would be too low, imo.

          But something like sovereign tech fund funding a browser seems quite reachable, but the mozilla foundation sadly doesn't really accept funding for developing the browser (to my knowledge)...

            @wyatt_h_knott @eniko @EUCommission librewolf is not the solution. It's a lightweight fork. A real hard-fork is needed for real change and to make a good browser against google and mozillas wills

              @joshix Fair enough. I only suggested it to illustrate that there are plenty of ways to get free of surveillance, people are doing it all over the place.

                    @eniko Somewhat not entirely in favor of this, due to the whole "WebPKI vs eIDAS QWACS" thing (i.e. Firefox as the "EU browser" would probably lose the sovereignity that it currently has in terms of which "trusted" CAs it bundles by default, and even though I have a positive view of eIDAS for document signing and user auth and such, I feel like it has no business touching web server certs)

                        Problem is , EU it self doesn't follow its own rules, it is becoming authoritarian soon,

                        EU is on its way to soften up GDPR, the laws for groceries,
                        It soon starting with the age verification app.

                                        @konstruct @eniko @EUCommission Servo banned LLMs?
                                        And servo is written in Rust, right?
                                        Let's see for how long that will hold.

                                          @eniko @KimSJ @EUCommission The EU is a lawyer-powered organisation. Talk to China if you want any engineering done.

                                          @t_var_s @eniko @KimSJ @EUCommission China? I think that in Hong Kong and Taiwan they have a different feeling.
