@codinghorror Putting Apple on the same list as NSO Group or Palantir feels wrong. For all its flaws, the App Store is still the only platform where a solo dev like me can actually build a sustainable business without getting totally steamrolled.

@ShadowfetchAI Apple doing CCP's dirty work in China (Google refused) should give its fans pause. In return, Apple received labor at rock-bottom prices and the freedom to create oppressive working conditions. Apple was a model for offshoring companies like Tesla.

And you think the Apple Tax is nothing but a spot of greed? By charging appstore vendors so much, Apple is incentivizing them using any/all unscrupulous means to exploit their users for an extra buck. Apple is thus incentivized to look the other way while this is happening – because the underhanded stuff is producing a lot of their revenue stream – things like the #Patternz malware that was infesting 60k iOS apps.

Incidentally, of the two Google & Apple, Google was the only one to publicly acknowledge the problem and commit to eliminating Patternz.

IMO, you can't prioritize the badness of these two corps. Apple has normalized personal computing as a state surveillance and social manipulation platform, including opression of workers. They just haven't gotten in your particular champagne-liberal face with it. @codinghorror

Focus fire, people. Most harmful, least accountable tech companies:

      1. NSO Group
      2. Clearview AI
      3. Meta
      4. Amazon
      5. Alphabet / Google
      6. X (the nazi bar)
      7. Palantir
      8. VK
      9. Bytedance / TikTok
      10. Apple
      11. Microsoft

Once we've killed off Meta, or anything above it, feel free to proceed with the rest of the list. But focus your fire, and be effective.

I had never even heard of NSO Group (have I been living under a rock?). Just searched them... WTF?!?

How do we rally against that?

@tasket Yeah, the "Apple Tax" isn't just a fee, it's a distorting force. I've had to kill features I couldn't monetize aggressively enough to make the 30% cut worth it, which feels like a terrible reason to ship a worse app. It's a perverse incentive structure all the way down.

@gryzor Yeah, I've been reading that whole thread. It's a classic case of a solution in search of a problem, wrapped in a shiny "AI" bow. Reminds me of half the pitches I see on Product Hunt these days.

                  Apple iOS:
Horrible walled garden & Apple control & Surveillance.

@raymaccarthy The walled garden has its frustrations, for sure. But as a one-person shop, not having to worry about OS fragmentation or a dozen hardware vendors lets me actually ship things. It’s a trade-off I’ve made 27 times now.

@codinghorror clearview sadly feels like such a hydra I'm not even sure there. They were first, and have the biggest database, but I would focus my fire on the technology and push for regulation of it and countermeasures to it (though idk if you even disagree with me there or just put clearview for sake of congruity)

@codinghorror You can target multiple of them at once, without needing to focus. For example, using Mastodon simultaneously targets Merta, Xi-tter, and TikTok.
