    You can see how this is leading down a very dark path, right? You don’t have to be a science fiction author to be able to extrapolate from here.

    @Ashedryden TIL there was already an update to the "nobody knows you're a dog" cartoon. 11 years since the revision and it's still getting worse https://blog.mozilla.org/en/firefox/irl-on-the-internet-no-one-knows-youre-doggo/

      Two things:
      1. We are creating a two-tiered internet that will see people willing to give up their IDs having one experience while those who can’t, won’t, or don’t have them missing out on those experiences or being outright excluded from whole areas of the web

      2. Why you would be willing to give up your ID to web services that have such poor security in a time when identity is being weaponized by state actors is beyond me

      @Ashedryden Couldn't this be trivially bypassed using a deepfake setup (making the whole thing null and void)?

            @Ashedryden Someone should make a biometric randomization app already, which takes your likeness and then change the core face metrics randomly.

                    Secondly, given the excessive damage so much of the corporate Internet is doing to our species' collective cognitive ability, I think regulation is becoming essential, as we are incapable of self-regulating even in the knowledge of the harm.

                          @Ashedryden It'll be unsustainable too. The tier that requires ID will see a precipitous drop in access and traffic, by design.

                          I would speculate that whoever's pushing these rules knows that the majority of people won't give up their IDs to these random services, either through apathy ("I don't have time for this") or because it's a bad idea. Only massive platforms like Youtube will get people to jump through those hoops for access.

                          Painting everything the same shade of beige is the point.

                              @Ashedryden This is already the case of being excluded from the web. If you "choose" to hang around only on non-bigtech sites, then you are already excluded. If you have some principles then you are already excluded.

                              This is just another straw on the camels back.

                                    @Ashedryden I don't know that I agree.

                                    Your information is already in all of these systems, especially if you're walking around with a tracking device in your pocket via your phone. The ID verification is just a legal formality only an adult can fulfill.

                                    Secondly, given the excessive damage so much of the corporate Internet is doing to our species' collective cognitive ability, I think regulation is becoming essential, as we are incapable of self-regulating even in the knowledge of the harm.

                                    @FlashMobOfOne @Ashedryden This is a fatalist outlook. ICE’s current efforts to obtain advertisers’ data for their witch hunt shows that the scope of the data you give to each individual platform is extremely relevant.

                                    Secondly, if regulation is necessary, it should be towards corporations’ actions, not users exposing additional data to a growing list of platforms with poor security track history.

                                      Two things:

                                      @Ashedryden What protections do we have as users? None. I'll willingly go into the dark over this. Eventually I'll have to use pigeons and smoke signals to communicate with the world.

                                        @Ashedryden This is already the case of being excluded from the web. If you "choose" to hang around only on non-bigtech sites, then you are already excluded. If you have some principles then you are already excluded.

                                        This is just another straw on the camels back.

                                        @phantasus @Ashedryden
                                        I chose to delete my facebook accounts. WhatsApp, Instagram, gone. When a friend planned their birthday party, they had a WhatsApp group where they discussed who would bring what and what everyone would wear.

                                        Of course I was not in that group. I didn't know there was a desscode. I didn't know everyone would bring salad and stuff like that.
                                        I was already excluded, because I have principles.

                                        Friends buy the most recent Ubisoft game, or EA game, or Bethesda game, or Nintendo game, or some other game released by a shady company. I can't. I'm excluded from their talks about their new favorite game, because I have principles.

                                        Friends send me Tiktok links, or Instagram links, or Facebook links. I can't access them because I don't have accounts there. I'm excluded.

                                        The majority of people will freely give up their ID to companies with bad cyber security.
                                        I won't. And I'll be excluded again.
