@jalefkowit lightbulbs don't go there. Just ask any ER nurse!
But seriously, standards aren't... standardized.

@jalefkowit I use this One Weird Trick to tell which type of bulb a fixture needs!
I go to the hardware store and buy one bulb of every socket type except for a single weirdo socket type that nobody, including me, ever uses. Then when a bulb goes out I'm guaranteed that it's that singular type I *didn't* buy and since I know where exactly the thing I didn't buy is I can run out and get it really easily.

There is track lighting in my living room that's too high up for me to reach with any ladder I have. One of the bulbs burned out.
My electrician said he could replace it for me. I sent over pictures. He showed up with a bulb that was the wrong color temperature. No problem, he says, I'll take the burned-out one with me and order a correct replacement.
Four weeks pass without him getting back to me. I finally give up and ask him to tell me what bulb I need so I can go buy one myself. He sends me a screenshot of an Amazon page. I take careful notes of everything about the bulb in the screenshot.
Somehow I buy the wrong one anyway

@jalefkowit check your notes carefully. When I needed a specific component to repair our furnace a few years ago, I ordered the right part and the parts place sent a similar, but wrong one. The error was actually theirs and not mine. -

@fedward @jalefkowit Nnnnngh! I had this problem with a vent fan in the bathroom a few years back (also a keyboard for a ThinkPad now that I'm thinking of it).
*I* ordered the correct part, twice Amazon vendors sent the wrong item.

@jalefkowit You can buy any of various telescoping poles with grabby ends designed expressly for getting at such high-up light bulbs (or, as they call them back home, lot bubs).

@20002ist I tried that. The pole I wasted money on could not grab the bulb, and my tolerance for blindly buying poles until I find one that works is limited
