Why mathematicians are boycotting their biggest conference: More than 1,500 mathematicians are demanding that their field’s most prestigious meeting be moved from the U.S.

@sgtgary bahh. The image.. hmmm. Sine should be touching the x/y axis intersection (0,0)!!! ;(

(While unfortunate, this needs to happen. Everyone should move their meet-ups away from the US for now) #uspol
@sgtgary Good! And it's not the only conference - some already moved. Here in France, scientists are warned by their collegues to travel to the USA. And we have several official travel warnings for people in EU countries, too (e.g. if you are trans, how they handle your privacy etc.)

@sgtgary If I was an "apolitical" mathematician, I would boycott it just for my own security
@judgyweevil @sgtgary those are some heavy duty quotes

@sgtgary I also am not considering conferences in the US

from the article: "“Holding the ICM in the United States, after it started two illegal wars, represents a double standard, given that, practically immediately after Russia invaded Ukraine, the ICM in Russia was canceled,” -

I wonder if Terence Tao, probably the most prominent mathematician in the world, has said anything on this?
He was awfully quiet about the US regime cutting funding due to so-called "antisemitism" on campuses.
I did call him pout for complaining about the money, but ignoring the attacks on anti-genocide voices.

@provokingcats @sgtgary Not buying it. Sure, could do, but that is just a scummy old phase shifted cosine in disguise.

@oddhack I would guess the concerns are more about the ability to leave the country again.

@judgyweevil @sgtgary that's exactly what I meant about the quotes

For a story about math, they neglected some important numbers.
How many people actually attend a math(s) conference? How many signers were actually planning to visit? How far in advance was the venue and date set?
-
@sgtgary
Quite surprising how many international conferences there still are in the USA
https://internationalconferencealerts.com/usa-conferences@villavelius Absolutely agree. Everyone who still has their conferences in the US should be boycotted for the forseeable future.

@NatureMC I am glad people are being notified of the safety and security problems in the US!

@number6 I thought that too. 1500 methematicians are asking for it to be moved ou of the US, but those 1500 are not the attendees. Still, it's great that a many in the field are speaking up even if they are not attending.
