@hpod16 I took the train from Schiphol Airport to Amersterdam for a few Cdn $. On the return the conductor asked for considerably more. "Why so much?"
    "This is First Class"
I looked around and replied "THIS is First Class?"
So he charged me the regular fare.
In Canada there's no class, everyone gets a comfortable seat.

@Oldfartrant @hpod16 In my little corner of Canada, just having a train would be first class...

@mxhdroom @hpod16 I hear you. A train from Powell River to Vancouver would save me flying to see a specialist. I don't know how a train would bridge the two fjord though. On the other hand the float planes are fun and have medical fares.

        And so does the #EU.
From the high speed rail plan to passenger rights legislation, #EUPolicy touches #transport policy in countless ways.

I’m preparing a deep dive on trains next.

@hpod16 thank you for your work!
what is in progress so the border controls inside the schengen area won't delay trains anymore?

          @hpod16
I am interested in the history of toilets on rails.
          For example:
When was the first accessible toilet on trains?
When was the first pay-to-use toilet in train stations?
How are they designed? And why?,...

@hpod16 Thank you for doing this!

Which actions is the EU taking to make cross-border train services more competitive to other modes of transport, especially to flying?

With regard to ticketing, safety and operating licensing, for example.

My buddy and I rode a train back from Mexico City in 1972 (or '73 ?) to Laredo or Brownsville. It looked like something out of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid ! 😉 I'm pretty sure it was steam. It was so cool ! And kind of deserted - very few people on board. Will never forget that day. I wonder what you can find what trains ran in Mexico during that time and what happened to them ? or that one ?

                  1. why are EU member states taxing energy for trains, but not for air travel?
                  2. when will it be possible to book a single ticket across more than one country and operator, and enjoy passenger rights for the full journey?
                  3. What might the EC do to induce operators to offer more family friendly pricing?

@hpod16 4. What is the EU doing to make night trains more affordable? What is the role of track charges in this context?
                        5. For how much longer will the EC tolerate border checks that are illegal under Schengen? And what is the EU doing to eliminate the racial profiling that happens during these checks?

@hpod16 I would already be happy if the trains would look as clean as the one on the photo. Over here they will upgrade the rails so the trains can go 20 km/h faster after the high speed train project was scrapped.

Well, the European Commission has announced the intention to put forward a legislative proposal to make this kind of thing possible. It’s especially important that your passenger rights get covered should a train be delayed and have you miss a connection in another country.
It’s called multimodal digital mobility services, or #MDMS (which sounds like some kind of drug lol) and is about connecting more than just #trains.

@radundtat all that said I realise I can’t answer the “when”
Legislative proposals take the time they take and honestly my info on this is out of date. I’m going to have to talk to some colleagues who are transport experts

I do know Jon! I think I met him once about 9 years ago when he was organising the EU Tweet Up (when Twitter was still cool)

One thing about me: I LOVE #trains.
                                          And so does the #EU.
From the high speed rail plan to passenger rights legislation, #EUPolicy touches #transport policy in countless ways.

I’m preparing a deep dive on trains next.
Is there anything you want to know more about? Ask me questions, tell me fun facts.

@hpod16 Trains are absolutely the best, just next to trams and buses!
