@staff The live feed was my favorite thing about mastodon. I don't want my feed curated for me and I like seeing whatever random stuff comes through.

@gailen @staff also recomendations of instances with live live feeds?
Staff should do staff things, but please, help with alternatives.
What are bigger instances with working live feeds?

We plan to disable the "live feeds" of the local and federated timelines on mastodon.social within in the next couple of weeks. They are already disabled on mastodon.online. While these feeds can be useful on smaller, topical or regional servers, they have limited use on larger servers like ours.

The live feeds present all content on the server immediately and essentially pre-moderation, which presents a particularly poor experience to new users finding the fediverse for the first time.

@staff i agree vith your choise, staff should do staff things.
What's the alternatives? Which instances still have live feeds enabled and are big enough to have a lot of live feed?
Please provide alternative: it will help you too! Some ppl will move out, and that's will make your staff job easier 🫡

@staff So I can request to have these feeds restored on my account? Is that correct? I enjoy the live feeds, I like to see what's going on out there, outside of my personal curated feed.

            I was surprised.

I was enjoying the live feed too.

I was looking at the federate timeline and local timeline, and favorited and boosted.

I personally muted the unnecessary commercial accounts and enjoyed the experience comfortably.

How can I have it back?

              Thank you and best regards.

@staff I miss Live Feeds. That is how I populated my Home Feed by scrolling Live Feeds for users in the other federated timelines that I share interest with.

@staff I disagree with this entirely. You need to know what tags to look for to even guess if they exist. Getting to see items that people post in the wild helps people decide who’s worth following and better yet seeing everything and everyone out there on the fediverse.

I really hope you backtrack on this and if you don’t really hope you don’t disable it for any other instances that want to keep using it.

                        Really really disappointed…..

@staff but I liked the sheer mass of everything in one place all at once, that way I didn't have to follow anything in particular.

@64bithero Search is not limited to hashtags, and can help you find things to follow. Note that these feeds as seen from here likely differ significantly from feeds you see on your instance.

We recognize these feeds are useful on smaller servers, they are just not particularly useful on ours.

Move to a better instance, that doesn't gatekeep how you use it.

@staff These views were optional. New users could ignore them if they wanted.
I'd like both the local and global views restored for me, if possible.

I‌ relied on the serendipity these views availed as a window to the Fediverse, allowing the discovery of new people, interests that I‌ couldn't search for because I probably don't know about; ones that are not necessarily trending.

I would have understood a scaling justification, though.
