"the thing about ai is that code is cheap and quick now"

i am convinced that something that's at play here is that our perception of time spent coding tends to be much greater than it actually is, while perception of time spent prompting the machine tends to be much less, leading to a perception of time saved that doesn't match reality

@ana how do people who literally making their living writing code hear “code is cheap now with AI” and not flip the fuck out? they are literally telling you that they don’t think your skills, that you’ve spent a lifetime developing a career around, are not worth what they’re paying you. this is openly hostile.

@ana the bitter irony is that if the chatbot started to behave in a genuinely independent manner they'd probably immediately switch over to "it's broken now"

@ana tbf, I’ve read about people (as in non-techbros) building “relationships” with genAI agents, and I think this says a lot about the state of the society and dating scenes and shows tech-giants as exploiters of human tragedy (no surprises here, ofc). GenAI waifus (I don’t think I’ve heard about male-coded “assistants”) are on an entirely different level though.

when you're playing the slot machines you remember the time that coins spilled out all over the floor, but you don't remember all the times you pulled the lever and nothing happened. this does not mean playing the slot machines is a good way of making money!

@ana it's the timelessness of romance, the feeling of eternal communion with the machine, cradling the ChatGPT thingummy in one's arms and whispering sweet nothings into its ear until it finally coughs up something that can compile
