"i've now got an ai assistant running for me 24/7 and now i don't know how i'd do anything without it" omg omg you say that like it's a good thing that's going to end well for you
-
@ana oh holy fuck does it not end there, either. it's positively maddening how they'll spend all their energies waffling about the eternal mystery of consciousness and sapience and emotions when it comes to their fucking SOFTWARE but actual people? real human beings? totally a solved problem in their heads, a triviality almost. I have said this before, but the whole charade reminds me sharply of how Christofascists idolize "dead babies" (i.e. aborted pregnancies) and lavish all their supposed respect for life and living creatures on that one particular abstract thing, while being cruel and murderous towards actual living human beings.

"i argued about this slide with my ai a lot, and this is our compromise"
@ana I’ve seen and heard a version of “i argued about this … with my ai” and I don’t understand how one can argue with a statistical model. That doesn’t sound very healthy.

@wbftw i don't think they even realize how this sounds to people

does anyone else see the contradictions between the two ideas "your expertise is what is really valuable" and "i've outsourced so much to the ai i wouldn't know how to do it myself anymore"
@ana > does anyone else see the contradictions between the two ideas "your expertise is what is really valuable" and "i've outsourced so much to the ai i wouldn't know how to do it myself anymore"
Yes, but I think it’s implied there are makers (the ones prompting) and others who rely on their expertise to do less important things, like making slop-code work.
-
"the thing about ai is that code is cheap and quick now"
*spends all morning prompting and reprompting claude trying to get a trivial application to work properly*
i am convinced that something that's at play here is that our perception of time spent coding tends to be much greater than it actually is, while perception of time spent prompting the machine tends to be much less, leading to a perception of time saved that doesn't match reality

@ana how do people who literally making their living writing code hear “code is cheap now with AI” and not flip the fuck out? they are literally telling you that they don’t think your skills, that you’ve spent a lifetime developing a career around, are not worth what they’re paying you. this is openly hostile.
-
@ana the bitter irony is that if the chatbot started to behave in a genuinely independent manner they'd probably immediately switch over to "it's broken now"
-
filling out the spot in my 'ai psychosis' bingo card marked 'referred to ai assistant as "she"'
@ana tbf, I’ve read about people (as in non-techbros) building “relationships” with genAI agents, and I think this says a lot about the state of the society and dating scenes and shows tech-giants as exploiters of human tragedy (no surprises here, ofc). GenAI waifus (I don’t think I’ve heard about male-coded “assistants”) are on an entirely different level though.

when you're playing the slot machines you remember the time that coins spilled out all over the floor, but you don't remember all the times you pulled the lever and nothing happened. this does not mean playing the slot machines is a good way of making money!
-
@ana isn't it interesting how the techbro's AI assistant is always she/her?
-
-
techbros will really refer to an inanimate object as "she" before they'll respect the pronouns of an actual trans person
@ana oh god! They really will, won’t they. Ugh.

but what if you could get the dopamine hit from playing slots while still going to work and being a good corporate drone? hmmm...

@ana Perhaps related to the long tradition of referring to boats/airplanes/cars as "she"?

@meena that was such an amazing moment

@ana it's the timelessness of romance, the feeling of eternal communion with the machine, cradling the ChatGPT thingummy in one's arms and whispering sweet nothings into its ear until it finally coughs up something that can compile
-

@ana just like fundamentalist evangelicals (I refuse to call them Christian, because they are usually Mammonists) will give up pork so they can keep using Leviticus as a cudgel against gay people.
-
"code is easy now" counterpoint, no code is not easy you are just choosing to view maintenance and reliability and everything the llm can't do as an externality that somehow doesn't matter. code is still very hard
@ana fucking startup ideology innit

@ana don't be considerate, don't think about the future, don't think about repercussions or consequences, just "disrupt" as quickly and violently as possible
