Because here's the thing about Tarot:

None of the cards have fixed meanings; it is literally -all- vibes based, because the meaning derives from the way in which the person you're doing the reading for reacts to the imagery on the card.

The 'official' meanings are prompts for you to manage a guided interpretation of them figuring out their own shit.

A tarot reading is mostly a way to keep people's rational mind distracted with analysis so that it gets out of the way of them expressing what the fuck it is that's bothering them.

You don't even need cards to do this if you know the trick of it.

So what you do is you present them with something ambiguous and let them fill in the details, and then you continue prompting with randomly generated images to bring out the associations and concepts that are on their mind.

And then you agree with their interpretation of their internal state and reflect it back to them - perhaps you might reword it a bit to emphasize a different detail, or turn it around and make it a question to prompt further discussion.

But the critical thing to note here is that you yourself aren't really bringing anything new to the situation; you're holding their attention while they reflect their internal state off of you and then work out what it means.

The meaning is something they bring themselves; it's nothing you're actually involved with other than providing the time and space for them to suss that out.

This is an extremely the fuck unsubtle view of how people attribute meaning to the spew that LLMs put out.

People Bring Their Own Meaning To Random Shit All The Time. It's called apophenia and it's a standard feature of human brains and it's very useful for building up connections of abstract concepts but it's also something to be aware of when some fucking machine is spewing fucking bullshit text at you.

@munin thank you for putting this to words. Same goes with spirit animals and many more. Presenting people "something" and then pay attention to what they do or do not come up with.
And imo this is not cheating. It is about tickling out what is in the people. Sometimes they need a little nudge from "outside" to be able to let go of inhibitions that obstruct the view on their inside.

It becomes problematic when the teller creates a power imbalance and exploits peoples vulnerabilities.

Which is very much the case with LLM usage; there is a very strong power imbalance and a specific incentive towards exploiting the user.
