      @adhd_coffee A meme featuring black text on a white background above a photograph of an open book. The text reads, "When you have ADHD and they tell you to highlight everything important" with "[@]coachingwithbrooke" underneath. The photograph shows an open book where most of the text on both pages is covered in bright, neon green highlighter. Only small patches of the original black text are visible beneath the heavy green markings.

          @adhd_coffee even if you don’t have ADHD, highlighting important words in a text has no meaning. It only has a value if you can summarise/reproduce the information

            @adhd_coffee My work around was to use stick on page markers, you just use them as bookmarks for things you'll want to go back to when writing an essay. You can usually write on them too.
            I gave up trying to highlight in my first semester.

                    @adhd_coffee For me, I think it offensive to stand between the author and their next reader, because sometimes the next reader was me.

                      @adhd_coffee

                      The tip i learned in grad school when I had to get through dense reading lists quickly:

                      First/last sentences of paragraphs. (Treat a paragraph like a mini essay, with a thesis and conclusion.)

                      Sentences in the middle with words that signal a shift in or deepening of an idea/argument: however; moreover; Conversely; Nonetheless; Nevertheless, etc.

                      Summarize these notes in margins or your notes. Then go back and read citations. I found that this helped cement concepts.

                      I still use this technique when I need to digest complex large pieces of writing (like briefs, legal memos, policy reports, a lawyer's email....)
