" #Russia adds #Hungary to 'unfriendly countries' list after #Magyar wins"

@ahmadlubna @benroyce Here it is - Bannon's address to what we now know has been the Kremlin-funded CPAC in 2017, cited in Naomi Klein's book, 'No Is Not Enough: Resisting Trump's Shock Politics and Winning the World We Need', first published the same year.
This is not the full speech, just some more data-points in a disturbing picture that suggests American politics in now thoroughly compromised by its traditional geostrategic adversaries. The Cold War never really ended...it just got colder.

@ApostateEnglishman @ahmadlubna @benroyce I wonder how Bannon can keep putting out stuff like that and not be investigated for treason.

"Imagine. To peer across the world and know the enemy's secrets. To place our thoughts into the minds of your leaders. Make your teachers teach the true version of history, your soldiers attack on our command. We'll be everywhere at once, more powerful than a whisper, invading your dreams, thinking your thoughts for you while you sleep. We will change you… all of you from the inside. We will turn you into us. And the best part? You won't even know it's happening"

@ApostateEnglishman @benroyce "Oh no… what a tragic loss for all those who thrived on shady alliances and ‘creative’ definitions of democracy. Funny how things start to fall apart once the spotlight hits, isn’t it?"

@benroyce One of the things I like best about democracy's victory in Hungary is that it provides an irrefutable argument against those who claim "voting doesn't matter" and "voting can't change totalitarian regimes." Of *course* voting matters! Orban is gone! Everyone needs to vote, every time! (And we can still protest, throw sabots, etc. It's not either/or.)

but if it's true that voting works, that means i can't just whine endlessly and impotently online, to do the fascists' work for them and argue for helplessness and inaction on a potent tool against them, and thus provide a rationale for accepting their abuse
but surely my cynical defeatist whining will fix things?

Believe a more subtle point is also demonstrated in Hungary.
That the perfect is the enemy of the good.
The victorious coalition is not liberal. It is a conglomerate of 'everyone but the fascists.'
The important thing was for them to put down their differences, show up and vote the fascists out.
Only now, with democracy restored, can they move forward.

@mastodonmigration @msbellows @benroyce Exactly. The new Hungarian leader is nowhere near someone I'd vote for in a perfect world. But would I have voted for him against Orban (or Trump)? Hell yes.

"i don't want the lesser evil, i want good"
every political choice is between evil and lesser evil
all times past, now, forever more
if a candidate is angelic, smearmongering gossips do their work and in the popular imagination the good candidate is now the lesser evil
the problem is not choosing between evil and lesser evil
the problem is your faulty cognition about what is really going on
you *vote*
you *iterate*
you *sustain*
et voila:
you get good

@benroyce @msbellows Cynical defeatism is like one of those ouroboros snake things. The useless inaction and whining empowers the fascists to do even more awful stuff, which in turn inspires even more cynical defeatism
Except in this metaphor the snake is sucking its own dick

@benroyce @mastodonmigration @msbellows And NO ONE will ever be perfect or perfect to all. People will always have different priorities based on their lives. There are overall priorities, though. Are they going to move things forward or backwards? Human rights or dehumanization are pretty clear differences to consider when voting and that’s where we are in these times.
Perfection is only ever something to strive for, not something to expect.

@benroyce @mastodonmigration @msbellows nodds in agrement those that refused to# vote against #Trump just because they weren't promised to:
- have their cake,
- eat it,
- and get paid for that,
are IMHO worse than those that voted for Trump because they KNEW the results and were happy to throw people ubder the bus for their own smugness and ego.
- Cuz at least the #Christofascists have the honesty to out themselves as #fascists and not claim "moral high ground" for not voting!

This basically describes every Democrat in the USA except Bernie, AOC, and a few others.
Dear Marcy Kaptur, I'm not voting for you, I'm voting against the GOP.
