the id requirement stuff in apps like discord isnt happening just cause discord feels like being scummy or something, its a matter of time before thats required by law.

@h@besties.house as long as it isnt law everywhere, this is still just discord being scummy and they can rightfully be criticized for that. in german we have a term for this called vorauseilender Gehorsam and its very negative and often cited as a driving factor of the nazi regime. i think its fair to criticize those who engage in it
@stella its likely going to be law in the US in some states (legislation like this being pushed by both parties) and theres a push for law like this elsewhere as well- Ofc i would Like for them to hold off until they have no choice, and i do think it is shitty that theyve not done that, as i said “not to defend them” cause i do think it is shitty. i just also dont think theyre doing this on their own accord, cause- they just arent, theres reasons so many other companies are doing the same right now. again doesnt mean they can be all excused!!!! it still sucks!!!! but its not an independent decision of discords to do this, its not happening in a vacuum

@stella if i had to guess id say i think its simply strategic, that if legislation requiring this happens it will be much less of a headache if they have already done this age verif work Or some thinking along those lines. which i again dont say to excuse it cause its really shitty that these businesses have no morals to stand on, but its not like thats news to me either

@yassie_j @fiore @ellie i was talking to my therapist a couple months ago and she was talking about how the Kids shouldnt be allowed on Apps like it was an uncontroversial position and i had to tell her if i didnt have the ability to inform myself on queer subjects and find communities to be myself in i wouldnt have made it and it was like she genuinely had not considered that angle at all and she had to reevaluate her position lmao. She’s really nice, i can’t even be that upset with her it’s like Everyone in her demographic thinks this way
