There must be a Unicode geek here who can explain why the heart emojis include grey, pink, and light blue variants, but the circles and squares don’t?

Existing Emoji compatibility basically.
Without looking through all the docs, I suspect that the coloured circles already existed in Japanese phones - so were encoded "as-is".

@katemorley@hachyderm.io Characters are added when somebody asks nicely, they only asked for pink/gray/light blue hearts, and nobody thought to add other shapes.

Digging around a bit, I've already found 6 different Unicode versions adding coloured hearts:

• 6.0
• 9.0
• 🧡 10.0
• 🤎 12.0
• 🩷 15.0

@katemorley Perhaps they could solve this by adding colour combining characters and deprecating the colour-specific codepoints for shapes? For simple shapes, they could be composited algorithmically and new colours added as needed.
