      @kibcol1049
      I remember when Google came along and made Magellan, LookSmart, AltaVista and Yahoo redundant almost overnight. I used Dogpile to submit the same search string to multiple databases simultaneously, then you could continue with the one that looked most promising.
      And Google was just a page with a search box. Nothing else.

        @GOKUSHRM @kibcol1049 And the smaller the phone, the more impressive it was.

                  Not if it's in your sitting room, I suspect. All the windows and the crockery in the cupoards would rattle.

                        I remember when the Web was new. I remember hoping that it wouldn't take off, because I had to pay for dialup by the minute, whereas, before the Web, I could just log in, collect email and news, send my messages and hang up again, all within a minute or so. Much cheaper!

                          @kibcol1049 @TheMNWolf Yep for example I used an Archimedes to browse the Internet in the early days and midi files weren't a thing on that platform, but we did have lots of repositories of tracker music.

                                @FreakyFwoof @kibcol1049 @TheMNWolf Yeah shame they didn't have a proper screen reader for the Archimedes. It didn't really work without a mouse to be honest.

                                    @harrymuzz At my first job, the computer room temperature was controlled with double door air lock to enter. The computer was huge with punch card operators typing and huge floor to ceiling reel to reel tapes. The print outs were on large sheets of paper and took several runs for all the errors to be corrected. With programmers, inputters and clerks, there were about 8 staff. Nowadays a kid of 8 or 9 could do it all and more on a smartphone and 30 times quicker! Hard to believe but true.

                                      Use a rubber band around a small deck.

                                      If the deck was more than an inch thick, draw a diagonal line on one edge face so if they got scrambled you could reassemble without sobbing.

                                      Too big for a rubber band?
                                      There were purpose-made boxes.
