A week old but can’t stop thinking about the healthy life expectancy stats (Healthy life expectancy trends in the UK: a watershed moment.)
90% of local authority areas have a healthy life expectancy below the state pension age (in 10% it’s below 55). Combined that with the constant whine that people should be in work, not on health-related benefits, and we’re back to the bad old days when you worked until you were broken.
The difference now is that, because overall life expectancy has improved, it’s ’work until you are broken, then spend longer being miserable and ill’.
For many data like these are abstract, too far in the future to matter. But it is all part of a depressing mood music, another indication that optimism is just a British way to say delusion.
