Apple is preparing to fold the iPhone — whether or not anyone asked for it.

@gareth @scrummy @Reddog @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis I went iPhone 4, 5S, SE, SE₂ and forced into a 12 pro having run out of money.
@cachondo @gareth @scrummy @Reddog @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis I have a 3 year or so cycle where I buy the latest phone, keep it for 3-4 years, then give it to Mum after buying latest model again. We did well last time round with the iPhone 11, I had it for 4 years and now Mum has had it for 3 years, always running latest iOS. I don't think it will get the new iOS though so decisions will need making end of the year.

@peteriskrisjanis I've never owned an i-phone. A friend loves them but has to keep buying a new one every year as the built in obsoletion kicks in. Despite the fact that he only uses the main features which are now available for a quarter of the price in android phones. Still -he's happy, poorer but happy! 🤭
I started with iphones, not knowing what they were, and iphones were walled garden enough to make mistakes and not crash the device. then when I truly understood how they function I ditched them. a computer is a computer and this includes smart phones. paying 4 times the price for a thing does the same things as other things under a different brand is beyond dumb. all apple users are in an abusive relationship (the company abusing the gullibility of the users)

Look, I’m not judging. If someone wants to spend their own money on a new shiny toy every year, that’s their business. I wouldn’t, but if he’s doing that and is happy, fair enough.I just object to the excuses. If his phone is genuinely slowing down, he should try hard resetting it and testing it after installing a portion of his usual apps. Maybe one of them is misbehaving. Maybe he’s buying one with not enough storage for his needs and he’s filled it completely. But no major phone manufacturer would build in “planned obsolescence” on a year old device. Apart from being illegal, if they got caught (which let’s face it, they would!), it would destroy their reputation. There have been individual incidents with various companies over the years, and they’ve been publicised and crucified for them.
@gareth @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis
apple has been screwing their users for decades now and it has not affected their bottom line. examples include purposefully degrading battery life through programming, removing the 3.5 mm plug forcing users to buy $300 ear buds (that fall out of ears at the drop of a hat), a stylus that costs hundreds of dollars, and partnering with a company that drives their workers to suicide to the point nets had to be installed around the building. come the fuck on.

@coolcalmcollected @gareth @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis had to do a small site inspection job for some light columns on their campus some years back. can confirm they are also a terrible client.

@gareth @peteriskrisjanis Amazing. I think that's an exception. But does he use it much, I suspect not.
@kibcol1049 @gareth @peteriskrisjanis This hasn’t been my experience at all. I’m on my 3rd iPhone, my first being the iPhone 6, then 11 and now 16. I have kept all of my iPhones for 5 years and have never upgraded because they stopped working or slowed down. I just feel like 5yrs is good enough value for me. At five years, reduced battery life is beginning to feel noticeable and enough improvements have been made for me to justify the upgrade.

@moelassus @gareth @peteriskrisjanis That's good. It's seems some have issues and some don't. It's the price which puts me off. Apple have in the past settled out of court for stealing technology from Android and vice versa. The net effect is I can get everything I want in a Samsung Android that costs a lot less than the i-phone and just as reliable.

The iPhone software makes 7 year old ones obsolete. -

That’s an excuse, at best. My dad is still using my iPhone 12 from five years ago quite happily. The only reason I upgraded from it was that they switched to USB-C two years ago.@gareth @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis I’m happily using an iPhone SE from early 2021, the only issue for me is the battery life of approx 12 hours now!

@oftencalledcathy @gareth @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis IPhone 11 here. Lasts most of the day. But recharges in the car when out

@kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis Built-in obsolesce is in the human. I used a 4s until two years ago, when 3G got turned off. No one needs a new phone every year. That's either having a lot of extra money or a phone plan that keeps customers updated with new phones, or really into FMO, addicted to new tech.

@oftencalledcathy You might be able to have the battery replaced. If not by Apple, then by shops specializing in out-of-warranty repairs. @gareth @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis

@CStamp @gareth @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis yeah I saw that, but is it worth it if security updates stop at year 7

@oftencalledcathy If you are still using the phone, it keeps it more functional. @gareth @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis

@moelassus @kibcol1049 @gareth @peteriskrisjanis went from a 13 Pro to a 17 Pro, mostly for the much better cameras as I do not own a dedicated camera, and the battery was still doing OK at about 75% but getting it to last all day was becoming impossible. Plus I wanted to switch carriers and the new one is 100% better; I could have done that with the old phone but figured it was time.
People who say they have to replace iPhones every year “because Apple does that on purpose" are blaming some nonsense they saw on FaceBorg or whatever. They are wrong.

@david @moelassus @gareth @peteriskrisjanis Never having paid the high price for an i-phone, I can't disagree. Each to his own. If it works for you, good. As I Indicated earlier in this thread, I can get everything I need from a cheaper android, but that might not be good enough for everyone. I'd just urge you to compare specs and check you can't get what you need cheaper.

No, not if you use it on the internet. Worst case, you visit the wrong website or get served the wrong advert and your phone gets compromised and they get into your email/online banking.For the majority of people, it’s not just a phone. Keep it up to date. Replace it when security updates stop. The same with old versions of Windows. It’s just not worth the risk.

@kibcol1049 @moelassus @gareth @peteriskrisjanis That's fine! But the very tight integration of iOS with the Mac and all other Apple kit makes any Android phone a non-starter for me. I don't mind paying a little more for that.

@gareth @CStamp @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis I’ve just replaced my laptop for those exact reasons.
I now need ideas for what to do with my old laptop! Which works perfectly *sigh
