This isn't that different from editing a photo in my opinion, what do you think?
@dansup I'm with you, @dansup . I don't see the harm either. I looked at the replies I suspect you're referring to. Childish things on the internet? Yeah, that's part of it. Emulating platforms we want to leave behind? That's what Pixelfed already *is*, like the whole intent, feature parity or not. What matters is the underlying platform's (and its owner/operator's) intent with the data it has. I don't see how dog ears or a pig nose changes that.

@dansup I think they are funny. I'm too old to use them, but lots people like to make funny videos using them, and having them built in is something that could help the fediverse gaining more people. Great job!

@dansup risks are different on different contexts, risks always exist for someone, harms not always, not even always when a risk exists.
It's important to consider the risks, and to mitigate them when possible and feasible. It's important to design software for safety, but it's bad to consider that risks are always harms, and to lead all decisions based on that conclusion, instead of the entire reality.

@dansup this means that maybe you should consider to at least provide a warning and a link to some resources for people who are watching filtered images, so they can know of the risk, and where they could maybe get help if needed.
This is obviously just an idea, there might be others better, it's just to get the thinking rolling.

Most harm is done when AR filters are used to deceive. Implementing a clear indicator (one that can't be switched off by filter developers without forking the whole app) would be a good step in the right direction.
Being able to block content using a specific filter for each user would be another.

@dansup I know you can always do it with an external editor. But there is a middle ground between 'make it impossible' and 'make it easy'.

@dansup Of course AR filters aren't harmful. Not unless every single video is forced to use them! AR filters are just another tool. They're not for me (I might play with them once), but others like them. I don't use every tool in my toolbox every time I do a job, but there's no harm in them being there.

@dansup I don't think they are harmful either and can be fun to use. I was just confused about priorities as the promised UI is a year late.
But I honestly think the for you algorithm is. You might not send your data to big tech, but you're stuck with the same harmful addictive patterns big tech had invented to keep you trapped. So, I don't think people spending more and more hours in it's actually a good thing.
With Pixelfed for example, I found it's much better at avoiding harmful patterns.
