a winter prune for my Portulacaria afra (spekboom, elephant bush).

this little plant had humble beginnings but it is slowly growing more convincing as a miniature tree.

    P. afra is a great choice for indoor bonsai, as long as you can provide enough light. they respond predictably to pruning; the wild plant is used to being eaten by elephants, so my little trims are no problem. it is also tolerant of inconsistent watering.

eventually, some of those lower branches will come off. but for now they are doing the job of thickening the trunk, and building taper.

@ignova Nice. How long did it take to get that trunk thickness? I just started one.

the second, smaller P. afra got a trim, too. it's hard to photograph this plant in such a way that you can see the branch structure, but you can see that it is developing a trunk with some character, as well as a decent radial rootbase.
