    Britt lore:

When I was a kid, and honestly still - I absolutely loved reptiles, but in particular: turtles!! 🐢

Growing up in GA, Spring and Summer meant thunderstorms every evening. Often, local rivers and roads would overflow and turtles would get ‘lost’! Driving around, young me noticed how often turtles would stop traffic after a big storm to cross the road.

So, I started doing ‘turtle patrols’ after storms. I’d ask my parents to drive me around after it rained so I could rescue any turtles stuck trying to cross the road. I had great success and helped many a’ turtle in my youth!

    #Autism. I love my autism. 🥹

(Update: Also, pls enjoy some turtles I recently 3D printed for myself!!) 💕

@britt I don't have much experience with reptiles in the wild, but my daughter brought home a hornworm from a pet store the other day, saving it from becoming reptile food. This lead to a quest for "hornworm chow", which lead to Roonami, a pretty big reptile store in North Edmonton. She loved it, it was like a trip to the zoo!

@cwant this warms my heart so much!! Thank you for sharing this story with me - but even moreso, for fostering a place of curiosity and wonder for your daughter. 🥹

I’m in Edm and didn’t know that place existed, I’ll have to check it out!

@britt there's this beautiful last chapter of "Braiding Sweetgrass" that talks about something similar with salamanders.

“Each time we rescue slippery, spotted beings we attest to their right to be, to live in the sovereign territory of their own lives. Carrying salamanders to safety also helps us to remember the covenant of reciprocity, the mutual responsibility that we have for each other.”

@seedlingsong I also should have added that I’m going to pick up a copy of Braiding Sweetgrass to add to my reading list for the year. Seems like a necessary read. 🫶🏻

@britt it's so good. I actually spend 3+ (I don't know..it might have been like 5) years listening to it very slowly on walks, chapter by chapter when my mood was right, as an audio book. Literally and figuratively a grounding experience.
