We knew this was coming, but now the clock is running. From Privacy International:

"Yesterday the Trump Administration announced a proposed change in policy for travellers to the U.S. It applies to the powers of data collection by the Customs and Border Police (CBP)."

"If the proposed changes are adopted after the 60-day consultation, then millions of travellers to the U.S. will be forced to use a U.S. government mobile phone app, submit their social media from the last five years and email addresses used in the last ten years, including of family members. They’re also proposing the collection of DNA."

PI linked to and summarized a Federal Register entry describing the proposed requirements:

-All visitors must submit ‘their social media from the last 5 years’

-ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) applications will include ‘high value data fields’, ‘when feasible’
‘telephone numbers used in the last five years’
-‘email addresses used in the last ten years’
-‘family number telephone numbers (sic) used in the last five years’
-biometrics – face, fingerprint, DNA, and iris
-business telephone numbers used in the last five years
-business email addresses used in the last ten years.

    Just a moment...

@briankrebs amazing. I travelled to russia and belarus a few times for work in the past, and that was less intrusive than this (admittedly, that was probably more because they didn't have the technology yet, nor a big palantir-powered data gathering/evaluation system to make use of the stuff)

@briankrebs Under the current administration, the US capacity, and downright craving, for self-harm seems infinite.

@briankrebs just one more step into, dare I say it? No, not really, because maybe some day I am forced to travel to the US...

@briankrebs I would be unable to comply, even if I wanted to (and hell, I don't want to).

I regularly use unique Email addresses and not all of them are documented. I guess that 5 years means 500+ email addresses.

HaveIBennPwned quite often informs me, how wise that move is 🙂. Do they allow wildcards in email addresses?

There are several more "no go" points in that text. And if a relative would hand out any information about me, I would consider that a breach of trust. So I won't do that either.

I think any person wanting to visit the U.S. at the current state must be completely nuts.

@pitrh @briankrebs I’ve never felt the pull of the USA but have agreed to visit as my wife has relatives there and staying with a local who knows the best places is always better.

That is now not happening any time soon at the insistence of my wife!!

@masek The thing is, they know that people will omit information. This is what gives them the upper hand. So the only way to win this game is not to play...

@briankrebs the thing I am most worried about is that once this is implemented it will not be undone later. Rarely do security measures get reversed, authorities get too comfortable. This whole thing is sick

@briankrebs I think we can be sure the mandatory CBP app for the application won't be trustable either and could well be backdooring your device.

Canada needs to apply the same rule to every truck crossing the border, especially to/from Alaska and searching each one for fentanyl or russian contraband.

@anarchic_teapot @briankrebs It is madness in extremis.

To have to divulge your FB history in order to enter the US ...

Businesses in the US will surely now seek to depose the whole corrupt political system. It is clearly pathological unfit for purpose.

Something will explode soon and then the tide will turn.

@anarchic_teapot @briankrebs My brother was a drummer. Used to practice when we shared a bedroom as teenagers - when I was trying to go to sleep! Only on rubber coated plywood boards, but even so ...

Used to play community football every week for years with no leaders - superb self organising anarchy in the original sense of that word.

@derickr @ojensen @briankrebs Password managers! They can hold unique email addresses as well as the expected passwords and user names. Every account should have all three of those unique.

Gmail, firefox, duck, and pretty much all commercial email providers let you generate more email addresses than you'll ever need. Having hundreds of active email addresses is a normal thing. I tell myself that 😏.

@arrakeen_urbanite @briankrebs Then people who are escaping will have to find refuge outside Europe.

@arrakeen_urbanite @briankrebs No. Let them travel. Let them come. Let EU be a safe haven for anyone wanting to flee Drump Country.

I’m really worried that the idea that cultural exchange stops is one of the prime targets of the current US „administration“. Don’t help them achieve this goal of Northkoreanification

We knew this was coming, but now the clock is running. From Privacy International:

"If the proposed changes are adopted after the 60-day consultation, then millions of travellers to the U.S. will be forced to use a U.S. government mobile phone app, submit their social media from the last five years and email addresses used in the last ten years, including of family members. They’re also proposing the collection of DNA."

PI linked to and summarized a Federal Register entry describing the proposed requirements:

@briankrebs No way I could comply as I use wildcard email addressed (and have hundreds of domains) meaning I literally use a different email address on every form and web site and have no way to know them all. I have also had allocated to me well over a million phone numbers (as part of a junk call thing) - I could probably get a list of those and see if I can blow up the ESTA web site perhaps. And I have no right to give other people's numbers to the US either - does anyone, legally?
