unearthed test track from a few years ago
was trying a new (at the time) m4l port of our rig - a lot closer to the way the rig works in Max than the older port we used on SIGN/PLUS
(so a good chunk of it was culled from the bit of the set i was working on then)
@sean_ae i like this, it feels very hip-hop… i could imagine something like this on an anticon record or similar …

@chorist yeah i would say so, cos loads of them are doing more than you'd normally think of that type of module doing strictly (although it's a bit like how hardware synths might have some sequencing internally alongside whatever you're sending to them)
the way i do it is seq modules just do sequencing, synths do sequencing and synthesis, and fx do sequencing, synthesis and effect stuff
it gets more complex as you go down the chain basically, to the point where i can be doing whole tracks in one fx module (i do this cos my background is making one patch per track and i still like working that way sometimes cos it def has upsides)
i mean end of the day it's Max, and although i enjoy the rough formalism of hardware workflow i also like the weirder things you can do with hardware, and the near total connectivity you get in Max
@sean_ae @chorist thanks for sharing the great track and also I really appreciate how much you share on here about your patching ideas. this is really interesting to see that you have synths do sequencing and synthesis and that fx also do effect,synthesis and sequencing.
Do you work this way because it allows for new types of sounds from the effects modules synthesis or is it more that you end up with an endless amount of variations depending on how you sequence and synthesis from the effects? -

i mean really i'm just using the hardware paradigm cos i got used to that before VSTs were a thing, and then expanding the idea a bit into anything goes territory (and i already thought of hardware that way cos synths can have things like envelopes, LFOs, arpegs, built in seqs - and some fx units would be able to use midi notes and had LFOs or envelopes etc, and to me all of those things can be generalised into 'sequencing')
but the lines between sequencing/synthesis/processing can get very blurry - like it's prob a bit arbitrary to split modules up into types at all, it's mostly a factor of age and experience in my case, habits etc

and with some synths or fx there might be some kinds of animation that you find more effective than what you're used to seeing in those contexts (like an LFO might be boring in comparison - or not, ymmv and all that)
same goes for envelopes - like it's best not to take anything for granted (just cos it's how it's always been done), and there might be more interesting alternatives (imho there are anyway)

Started building this thing with stepdiv~ at the centre. Using function as a grid allows for a lot of freedom regarding how you work with trigs. This was the initial design. Shared an updated version with Sean a few days ago. -

@sean_ae @eko_ Love that you’re using the term “animation” there. That word’s been in my head a lot lately and sometimes feels more apt than sequencing for some reason (more fluid?). Especially at the level of sound design, when things happen in shorter time spans… a sound can feel “static” and I realize it needs more “animation”

@exitonly @Lime wow yeah can repro, is super obvious with high buffer sizes (which itself is weird cos why would that affect anything unless Live is doing something like running in audio interrupt) - am even getting it on the same channel, gah
weird though, swear down it wasn't doing this 3 years ago (you can hear on that track it was p tight)
maybe something changed
will be piping as much as i can through LOM then, u know any other workarounds?

@eko_ @Glubhorn9 @sean_ae @chorist cheers! Appreciate it really. The sampler is p cool but I’m still working out the best way to deal with samples. Not sure if its better storing within tons of buffers (polybuffer~) or load straight from the ssd. Testing it out on a new machine and it’s almost the same, but seeing as its likely becoming a commerical module I’d love to accommodate people with less recent machines so they have a fluid experience using it
