@sjvn So we're occupying the oil, basically, and installing another CIA-friendly shah? Makes sense. Who cares about precedent?

@AAKL Nah, that's way too much for Trump to do. I expect we'll try to occupy the Iranian shores of the Straits of Hozmuz and Kharg Island--and I also expect it will be a bloody disaster.

@sjvn Interesting, assuming he's the one controlling the show, which he isn't. But this also assumes Iran hasn't mined everything. There's a precedent to this: when Saddam Hussein set the oil fields on fire to slow the advance of U.S. forces.

@sjvn But I would argue, after seeing today's news, that the plan is to control the Straight or to put it under U.S. or international control.

They might take the shore, but they'll be stuck between water and a mountain range, full of nooks and crannies to hide drone bases.
If US troops don't want to be sitting ducks for drone attacks, they'll have to charge up a mountain to secure more territory inland. Charging up a mountain does not have an encouraging history.

@Phosphenes @sjvn they might isolate the Straight and put it under U.S. control. Risky, but potentially crippling for Iran.
