Can the AI haters give it a rest already?

Leeches were ultimately found to have some real-life medical use, IIRC. Again, I think you’re comparing apples and oranges. I could turn off a lamp if I really didn’t want to use it. I can’t shut off the ever-escalating applications of AI everywhere. I’m not being given much of a choice. Maybe THAT is causing fear: lack of transparency and lack of choice. It’s rational to feel fear at something so powerful being pushed on me without my consent.
@xenophora @LeonianUniverse It was exactly the same when electricity first showed up. application after application was found for it. Progress always scares those who don't want to move with the times. If that generation of fearmongers would have had their way, there'd have been no progress at all of any kind.

Most people I know with deep misgivings about AI aren’t yelling the equivalent of “Burn the witch!” They’re upset because AI is being used in multiple settings in ways which do not appear to benefit them at all and the applications aren’t being adequately vetted and supervised.
I am open to hearing about beneficial applications, BTW. Or I wouldn’t have read this entire thread.

@maerlynofmiria @xenophora I'm not just giving instructions to the AI though, I always edit what I'm making, the way I see it is, I may not have the skills to play the instruments involved in creating the music, I'm not a keyboardist by any means, and 10 years of French Horn experience isn't going to help me make music that i want to make. I have only the music theory knowledge behind me, and I use that to help me when creating the music, but I treat the AI like a personal band, like if I were to pay thousands for people to make music for me based on my instructions and my lyrics, but for not thousands in up front cost. Its exactly the same, I'm a music producer, that's what I am. It is AI yes, it doesn't mean there are not human feelings and expression within the music that I create with the AI putting together the sound that I can't produce on my own.

If you want to go with this tack, then you also need to acknowledge that new tech is often badly applied before it’s adequately regulated, and its most fervent purveyors forced to take more than their own bottom lines into account when promoting it. Also, perhaps that tech should not be privately owned. I would definitely support public power in my region but the suits and their bought-and-paid for pols said “No. It’s ours. We control it so fuck off."

@xenophora @LeonianUniverse Let's see. Like I said earlier, it's giving me a load of help when revising books. Being a total, I'm rather unable to add visual elements, but aI has solved that problem. as well as revision in other directions. There have been areas where I've in the long run rejected ideas that would ahve been of the go nowhere variety. And where music is concerned, I've been able to produce a great deal of it, songs that would never have seen the light of day otherwise. Shopping assistance, then, once more, a lot easier to price items, especially since treditional sites seem to have this accessibility problem going on.

And documentaries like *Radium City* show just how many people suffer when a “miracle” tech or product is just dumped on the public without it being used with real restraint, testing, or understanding.

@xenophora @LeonianUniverse Oh, and once more where books are concerned, writing them, that is, researching for various time periods is a lot easier. If you're writing about 6th century britain, for instance, nothing takes a reader right out of the story by the introduction of, say, potatoes, into a setting where they hadn't been discovered yet.

@LeonianUniverse @xenophora Uh, you don't want to just give it instructions. fAr too easy for it to go its own way.
-
@xenophora @LeonianUniverse And I take it you also have hundreds of millions of dollars just growing on a money tree in your back yard to draw from if you wanted to produce music?
@maerlynofmiria @LeonianUniverse
No.I do use Photoshop to make visual collage, though. If that matters.
I’m very forthright about saying that I do, however. I’m not trying to pass off the Rough Pastels filter as me physically sitting down with a box of pastels to make a drawing.

@xenophora @LeonianUniverse That's also how pretty much any tech is handled. Let's take a look at the stranglehold Ford and so forth had on the automotive industry. Whether or not this movie was based on fact or fiction, Tucker, the Man and his dream is a great illistration of what I'm talking about here.

@xenophora @LeonianUniverse I freely admit that my revisions are done with AI. Same with my AI generated group Lady Labyrinth. when I play them on my shows, I say right up front that they're AI.

@maerlynofmiria @LeonianUniverse
…And I’m not saying that Rough Pastels is delivering a better image than a trained person would make with real pastels, from scratch. A Photoshop filter is just a fun flourish to be added to a thing I already laid out making my own decisions and/or choices.

That’s fair.
I know other sighted folks who aren’t native English speakers. They also like to use AI to polish stuff they submit in English. I just assume they are still checking the final version of their writings to make sure it maintains some trace of them.

@xenophora @LeonianUniverse Oh I always check for that. My narrative voice must always be maintained between drafts. The only difference is, the addition of visual elements in the same narrative voice and original writing preserved.

@LeonianUniverse @maerlynofmiria @technocounselor
I think I’ll maintain the likely unpopular position that we need some fear-mongering just to slightly push back against the wild rush by every institution on Earth to ram it up our collective noses at 500 mph. whether we asked or not.
In a better world, where the brokers and money people had basic ethics, I think there’d be less need for fear.
@xenophora @LeonianUniverse @maerlynofmiria @technocounselor That's understandable.
-
@xenophora @maerlynofmiria Yeah, but I always tell my audiance that my music was made with AI, I am very clear about it because I want people to know that it was made with AI, I'm not saying people are right for not revealing that, that is wrong if they don't reveal that it was made with AI, but AI music is just as valid as music made with other instruments and more direct human input.
@LeonianUniverse @xenophora @maerlynofmiria I don't even share my AI music.
-
@DavidGoldfield Thank you. The same people though that condemn AI on social media which is for some reason the sexy thing to do in tech circles now probably use it to have 3000 cat pictures described, and you know what? That’s great, they should, but they shouldn’t talk out of both sides of their mouth.
@technocounselor @DavidGoldfield I need to get 3000 cat picture descriptions now.

@startrek2025 @technocounselor @DavidGoldfield I use it for coding, making Suno music for fun, and use it in AI-powered games. I don't let it think for me, however.
@Orinks @startrek2025 @technocounselor @DavidGoldfield I use it for explaining things, finding out what food a restaurant has, general assistant things with Gemini on Android, vibe coding, music creation, and we even have local AI at work so we can put sensitive data through it and it doesn't leave the building.
