updated my laptop and desktop to fedora 44.
So far smooth sailing for both, it seems faster (especially updates thanks to migration away from PackageKit), and it also supposedly fixed the issues Nvidia users had while installing (can't verify because I only have AMD stuff).
Kernel 7.0 and Plasma 6 are also nice to have, default NTSYNC support will make WINE run faster, and there's new hardware support.
Fedora 44 looks to be a great release. I hope others will find it to be the same.

But here's a thing: it *won't* play H.265 codec, installed it, got it rolling, then it just cuts out.
Wake me again whenever non-pirate skills are needed, getting ever more fidgety.

rip, that's true, I guess we will see some hardware support being deprecated, good point!I think you should be able to still get it to work though, you'll just need to install the out of tree compiled broadcom drivers, the `akmod-wl` package I think will do the trick

@verymetalsite really? which player do you use? it should work (without installing extra codecs IIRC).. I just tried it and it seems to work for me (mpv as player). is the file okay?

Tried with both (flatpak) VLC and 'official' Fedora videoplayer, same results, multiple files tested.
But a codec being installed, working and subsequently *stopping* without reboot should_not_happen.

@verymetalsite yea it's definitely strange, I'm unable to reproduce it here also with vlc and dragon player and others I've tried. not saying your experience isn't real or whatever but it's definitely interesting because h265 should work
although it does seem like you might have to install the non-free version of ffmpeg (that's a licensing issue that linux distros can't really fix). maybe it's a hardware acceleration issue somehow, that would explain why I can't reproduce it maybe?

I'm just a humble pirate who is not bothered by licensing issues just like AI except when things don't work. Have not seen an ad in decades, would like to keep it that way.

FYI: Fedora 42 will go EOL tomorrow.
Fedora 44 has been smooth sailing for me so far, but since it has Kernel 7.0, if you have rather old hardware you might need to install some out of tree drivers (e.g on 15yr old macbooks you'll need akmod-wl from the RPM Fusion Nonfree repos).

@webbop yes! you can also skip at most one version when upgrading, but it's recommended to go through every version to get the proper upgrades of configs and packages
