    A poll, about naps! πŸ’€

    Do your naps work or are they broken? I know I'm not alone in it, but whereas taking a nap is enjoyable to a lot of people and makes them feel better, I always feel discombobulated, wretched and achy after taking one, as my naps are broken. I've hated taking them as fas back as I can remember! How are yours?

      @sinituulia

      Whether I sleep or not, I time my naps to 30 minutes to avoid sleep inertia. Otherwise, I'm liable to not feel great after a nap.

          @yourautisticlife Just imagining being able to fall asleep within 30 minutes... Even when I'm very very tired and sleepy it's more like 45 minutes under ideal conditions!

            @sinituulia

            Sleep is nice if it happens, but it is not a goal of mine.

            I find that if I put on some recording of thunder/water streams, put on my night mask, and put my head on the pillow for 30 minutes, my nervous system gets reset well enough to go through my day... even if I don't sleep.

              @yourautisticlife Having a bit of a lie down is entirely different from having a nap! I lie down for a little bit all the time, either because my body is having difficulties or because I just want to lie down and cuddle a cat for a bit. πŸ˜„ But napping, it's liable to go wrong for me

                @sinituulia I can't nap. I stopped napping early on as a child, to my mother's despair.

                  @sinituulia
                  Naps help me, because I've had sleep deprivation for decades now. Combine extreme night person with having to work nine to five. COVID times have helped, because nowadays I work at home 3 days a week.

                  But, I have sleep apnea, so I usually wake up from a nap gasping for breath and with a really dry mouth. I should use the CPAP machine even when taking naps. But I'm optimistic when I lie down on the couch for reading that this time I won't fall asleep...

                    @sinituulia naps mess me up most of the time. i feel confused and out of balance and unsure what day it is after a nap.

                    unfortunately i find myself drifiting off more and more often as i get older

                      @yourautisticlife @sinituulia Likewise! If I let myself nap as long as I want I come out of it groggy, but I set a timer for 35 minutes (5 to go to sleep and 30 for the nap proper) and that works best for me. I don't sleep particularly well at night but I *do* start off quickly.

                        @jmccyoung @yourautisticlife Falling asleep in five minutes sounds like a superpower... For me it's usually 45 minutes to two hours to fall asleep, though once I'm asleep I can usually fall back asleep faster

                          @nannyfrog In kindergarten I'd always lie down for naptime but then mostly get bored and get up to do papercrafts or whatever instead. I recall a couple of times the minders tried to make me stay down for the nap, with the thin blankets I didn't like, and I made such a scene that they then just let me pretend for a bit and get up soon eventually. πŸ˜… I was very stubborn and knew what I wanted, and was willing to express both of these!

                          I don't remember if I ever napped at home, but recall feeling like garbage if I fell asleep in the car...

                            @sinituulia I have always hated naps until this year. New meds make me so tired and sleepy I often have to take a 1-2h nap. And somehow I don't feel terrible after, but instead a little less sleepy, which is unusual.
