If I had a dollar for every time I posted a story about a data privacy breach and had someone reply with "That's a HIPAA violation" when it is not, in fact, a HIPAA violation, I would be wearing a lot more McQueen.

@evacide I sometimes think that people just like to say 'HIPAA'. We had a whole training about it and people still just say it whenever anything remotely health-related comes up.

@evacide And there are all of the violations that are in a grey zone that go unchecked (thinking of the pharmacists sharing info with police). If it's not a HIPAA violation it sure ought to be

@evacide hoo boy this is a pet peeve of mine working in medical billing. A fun story dealing with this: a few years I had a relative who was saying the COVID vaccine cards were a HIPAA violation and I yelled at them that between myself, my partner, and their partner we had *decades* of working in healthcare settings that they did not have and all of us told them it was not a godsdamned HIPAA violation.
It was very satisfying and shut them up good.

@evacide I'm reporting your post as a HIPAA violation. Don't be angry, just be grateful I didn't say HIPPA.

@evacide And they're probably spelling it HIPPA.

@evacide I sure wish more things were a violation of some sort of law. I had to wear a stick-on sensor for two-three weeks, then peel it off and send it in to get the data downloaded and sent to my doctor.
My email address started getting spam from that company.

@agreeable_landfall Strong federal data privacy legislation would sure solve a lot of my problems, but it is not likely to happen in our current political environment.
