@nuintari …in case you hadn’t thought of it, is there a chance you could use an individual RHEL development subscription, which I believe still permitted use on “small” production workloads last time I checked?

@matt_garber @nuintari not a bad idea, although I think the free developer version is for personal use only.

Well fuck. Remember when I said I was going to be deploying a #Linux desktop for my mom's church's office? (My mother is the church secretary).

Yeah, that can't happen, because they use a proprietary church management software that is Windows based. Linux clients exist, but only for RHEL, SuSE Enterprise, CentOS, and Ubuntu. They state the packages will not work on other distros. The church will never pay for RedHat nor SuSE, CentOS is fucking shite, and Ubuntu is beyond shite. Even if I can get it working in another distro, the minute they have an issue, the vendor will stonewall the minute they see an unsupported configuration.

So I get to support a fucking Windows 11 machine.

I haven't touched a Windows computer in close to a year. This is gonna be fun on the bun.

@nuintari Can't you make plain old Debian look enough like Ubuntu to convince everyone that it is? (Basically cheat the cheaters)?

@nuintari why windows over Ubuntu? I understand not liking Ubuntu but it's odd to me to pick windows over it especially in an IT position.

@zindexminus1 Because Ubuntu is utter garbage anymore. I don't want to have to drive 40 miles to fix a grub fuckup because Canonical flubbed yet another kernel update.

My mother isn't going to be secretary forever, and I want to leave them with something that someone else can support. A reliable Linux distro would have been viable, but Ubuntu is hardly known for the consistency and stability of their updates.

@mjack @marios @matt_garber Thanks, but I have also realized that Linux in general is just a bad idea.

I can support Linux, but whoever inherits this church's mess after my mom steps down as secretary probably won't be able to. So Microsoft wins again because the world is basically incompetent.

@nuintari there's ghost spectre windows that's already stripped back and if you want to lie saying it's Ubuntu you could always use arch and use debtap to convert the package

@nuintari Will it work with an Ubuntu based distro without triggering red flags? Mint for example is built on Ubuntu, so is it Ubuntu enough?

@nuintari I find the O&O ShutUp10 tool to work well, easy to use and you can easily apply a saved config to multiple PCs if needed. It takes care of pretty much all the annoying parts of windows.

@nuintari@bsd.cafe Those probably the four most used distros on the planet. How could any of those possibly be worse than Windows?
