@Gina You moving out or in?
-
This is me manifesting moving out of Amsterdam btw. I don't know where to yet, as long as there is more nature, sun and a house with a garden.
VERY open to suggestions π«Ά
@Gina
We like west Zaandam well enough. They've been building a lot of flats around the core, and last I checked they were even verging on affordable.Can still get a direct train to Amstel when I have the need to go to the office, but it is definitely a different pace while being close to Amsterdam.
-
@Gina Sun?

Well, I'd suggest Denmark. Jylland in particular has many small villages with (relatively) cheap houses and apartments.
But the Sun thing kind of spoils it. Yes, we do have lovely sunny days, like today for instance (or the entire week with the exception of yesterday) but we consider 20 Β°C to be a warm day, and 25 Β°C to be quite hot, and any warmer to approach unbearable

@rasmus91 I feel like Denmark is a hipper version of the Netherlands. Same shit weather.

@gh05t out, hopefully

@xinit Zaandam is cute, I've considered buying a house there (would not want to live in a flat btw).

"Okay, but why not just rent somewhere else in the Netherlands?"
I'm not joking when I say that there are no rentals in NL. There are a few other 2k shoebox apartments, but that's it. This is mostly due to disastrous housing policies by the previous governments and decades of barely building new housing.
To anecdotally add insult to injury, my current landlord is a pension fund. The Netherlands is a boomers paradise.
Kids, never paint a house that isn't yours.

@Gina Aahh ok cool. How's everything going? It's been awhile.

@Gina
I had hoped that pension funds couldn't own properties like they did in North America. -

@Gina tempted to say we could trade for a while

@Gina as far as i know our whether is very much like it is in Scotland around Edinburgh. You can have a sunny day that just turns to rain and wind, and then decides on sunshine again.
We often joke we have 4 seasons: autumn, fall, winter and spring

But in all honesty i feel like we usually do have some brilliant summer and spring days. But it's all in what your tastes are of course. If what you want is really just lots of sun. Then there's no point in being in northern Europe

@Gina i also avoid drilling holes since covering them would probably require some painting.

@Gina
We are on the far west side looking out over the polders. There's some older places in russicheburt and the like that are pretty nice, but old enough to be concerned about the foundations at our price range (β¬400k ish in 2023). -
"But Gina what's wrong with your house in Amsterdam?"
Yall, I used to have a beautiful garden, where my cats could play outside, and now I live in a soulless shoebox for 2k a month that gets NO SUN. Literally none. It's entirely north facing. Plus, I'm so over Amsterdam. I'm old. I want peace and quiet and greenery and gardening.
Greece has a lot of beaches and houses with gardens not fqr from them. Bulgaria has a very short coastline, but if a sea is not required, the rest of thr country is very picturesque and not as hot as Greece. Our new political power on top of the country is a bit troubling though.

@Gina I was so over rental bullshit that I moved onto a sailboat

And then bought an old farmhouse in dire need of renovating.
Because at least I can paint and drill and tear out walls and make it any colour I want.
And its ours. So any improvments we make to it are also ours.

@krisfreedain I'd trade in a heartbeat! (during summer)
-
@chasalin @h3artbl33d bruh if I'm going to move that far I'd rather live on the Waddeneilanden.
@Gina @chasalin @h3artbl33d Which is also not a bad place to live, and if you can work from a computer you can get quite a lot of work done on the ferry. It's just that most places in the Netherlands are still quite far from the mainland ferry ports...

@Gina Yeah, it does suck to have to paint so you can leave, but maybe the corollary to that is if you intend to inhabit a space for a while, paint it the way you like first thing so you can enjoy it for the longest time possible.
