    #Roblox, #Reddit and #Discord users must use biometric #ageverification tool backed by Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel

    @JamesBaker says:

    “People are worried, and angry, about having to hand over biometric scans of their face to overseas companies just to access online platforms. This includes children.

    “Users deserve to know who is behind these systems, how their data is being used, and to have a real choice about who verifies their identity online.”

    when there is a choice of verification options, and they choose Peter Theil ... that is not an accident.

      @openrightsgroup @JamesBaker "have choice about who to verify their identity with" what about not forcing people to deanonymize to use Internet services? It would be weird to have to log ID to buy a book, so it should be weird to have to log ID to access a website

            Especially since we won't do it here in the US. Not yet anyway.

              I'm totally fed up with this idea that some magical entity is entitled to my life and all that's in it. Or to be able to locate me wherever I might be in this world.

              In a vain attempt to avoid this invasion I won't have a cell phone, won't stay on a site that demands cookies and Use any possible means to keep my data mine.

              If some entity is going to sell my data at the very least I should be paid for every bit they sell, at my price not theirs.

                @charlesdelavalleepoussin @openrightsgroup @JamesBaker I wonder if Palantir has been lobbying for all these age verification laws? It would explain why such similar laws are all showing up at once, and why they “just happen” to be the vendor of choice to provide “necessary” age verification services.

                      It comes down to how much they need them. Which is... not at all.

                      That is the only thing companies understand. The bottom line. Change that, you get their attention.

                      Normalization should not be an option.

                        I've wondered about that myself. Happening across the globe and someone is driving it. My money is on Palantir, bringing us an age gated two tier surveillance internet in a dystopian future.

                          @openrightsgroup I've used all three of these platforms for years how, in my opinion the main reason why Discord and Roblox is rolling out AV globally is due to poor moderation of bad actors.

                          This backlash has caused investors to look the other way and lose revenue, however these changes are just ways to gain them back however users will have ways around these restrictions.
