Success. The torrented Dell drivers disc was able to be mounted in Linux, then I copied the contents to a folder on an external drive.

The torrented Dell drivers disc was able to be mounted in Linux, then I copied the contents to a folder on an external drive.
I was able to run the driver installer programs from that folder and it successfully installed the missing drivers (audio, wifi and nvidia graphics)
Posting this from the XP laptop now, using the Supermium web browser.
