@justinto @PallasRiot Are you for real saying that glasses must have cameras, facial recognition, & stream video to a data broker's server in order to correct someone's blurry vision? You don't need any of that. Just wear normal glasses. You can get glasses that don't have any of that.
@jackemled @PallasRiot the term visual impairment goes all the way to total blindness. You may be physically missing both eyes and the term is still visually impaired.
Normal glasses tend not to do anything for many many visual impairments. Perhaps speak to someone with a visual impairment, for whom glasses are not a viable solution to see how they feel about it, as we're not in that position. -

The basic things that I take for granted, these glasses give to people with varying visual impairments. No one is happy Meta is behind this, but I can understand the arguments for using glasses with these capabilities.

And I saw folks arguing recently that it's justified for some people to wear Meta glasses because of their disability and like...I'm sorry but if that's you I think you need to know you're a rube. Every single time these tech barons invent a new perversion to rob people with they argue it will help disabled people. Not only does it never work out but also none of these tech companies bother doing even basic things to accommodate disability. You really want to argue that disabled people should be subjected to Zuckerberg's panopticon? For the sake of what poorly put together bullshit exactly?
Tbh at some point if you're arguing that the tech barons are helping disabled people I kind of suspect you just don't care for disabled people very much. Please take to heart that this is always a scam argument.

@jackemled @PallasRiot I'm just going to point you to the Wikipedia page, but again I really suggest talking to someone with a visual impairments using the glasses. Some people are here on fedi. I also don't think all people with visual impairments would agree with the use, because people are diverse, and it's hard to capture all opinions with absolutes.

If there was then I would probably get them. The only thing it has in the assistive technology section is "shitgpt can randomly generate a description of an environment that might resemble your surroundings", which is dangerous. Smartphones already provide spoken navigation assistance & describe surroundings accurately to the last time they were surveyed & they don't rely on a random number generator to do so.

If they're using navigation software on a mobile device they also have notes on their surroundings that are actually accurate because a human went & wrote everything down. If not, they're with a caretaker or partner or friend that helps with that. Blind people are not stupid or completely helpless & it's ableist to imply that they are.

The software side is kind of lacking (it works but it's not easy to set up at the moment) but it's still proof that you don't need to depend on a corporation that spy on us for any of that.

This is not cutting edge tech but there would likely be a lot of liability directly making this a medical devices and far less profit. This is exactly like air pods becoming hearing aids. I hate Meta. We can always point to what can be done, but these are here now and I can't tell someone who's life could improved by the technology not to use it. I still dislike it alot, but the world is bigger than me
