    Keep Android Open

Your phone is about to stop being yours. In September 2026, Google will block every Android app whose developer hasn't registered with them.

    (keepandroidopen.org)

    125 days until lockdown

Starting September 2026, a silent update, nonconsensually pushed by Google, will block every Android app whose developer hasn't registered with Google, signed their contract, paid up, and handed over government ID.

Every app and every device, worldwide, with no opt-out.

@lproven I'm still waiting to hear if all of my existing apps are going to stop working. Even my launcher is FOSS and not in the Play Store.

You will need a Google pixel phone, for Graphene OS.

High end Android phones are out of my reach. I spend money on cycling parts

Any phone above 200 USD is out of reach of most people where the salaries are 50 USD or less.

Pixel phones are 700 USD or more

The Motorola phones which will work with Graphene OS have not even been put into production yet

The Android division of Google needs to be split up into parts like the Bell phone company for this treason

      @Radio_Azureus

You can look if lineage OS is supported for your device [here](https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/). Lots of low end and old devices are supported.

A step futher would be to get [lineage OS with microG](https://download.lineage.microg.org/) embedded into it. MicroG are apps that "implement" core google features like Play Services so most apps still function.

Will Graphene still be an option?

I mean, I sure as fuck hope so, otherwise nobody will be able to reach me. I'm not going back to Android or Apple. Fuck that noise,
I'll be fine without a phone.

The Motorola phone I'm currently dictating this toot in, has cost me about 20 USD
I had to buy it as a replacement for one of my G2 GSMs, which means it's memory is extremely Limited.
However I can still do some simple things like working on the FediVerse.
In my country both GSM network providers stopped with / shut down the G2 networks with just 3 days notice, leaving us stranded with useless G2 GSM phones. I still have to replace six G2 GSM devices.

We just cannot afford phones on Android price levels when we only need to replace G2 GSM devices

@rl_dane @AAKL @Radio_Azureus @joshg @lproven I'm still unclear on whether Google's upcoming lockdown will affect alternative ROMs, or whether they will be closing even more of the source code to prevent people getting around it

@lproven we need effective anti-monopoly action from governments.

You can own an operating system or an app store, not both.

You can be a TV production company or a streaming platform, not both.

You can be an advert broker or a content provider, not both.

              Forced unbundling now.

@lproven (actually, people stopped owning phones when phone manufacturers figured out that they can put cryptographic keys into mask ROM on the SoC)

@lproven technically there's an opt-out ("advanced flow"), but they made it deliberately difficult and it's not guaranteed that it'll remain available at all

                                short:
initial days i thought that android is open platform, somewhere 2012.

at approximately 2020, i got deeply sick of android world's control and closed components. i also learned that bootloader has some catches even when oem unlock is activated.

now i think that android stars to be lost cause.

Your phone is about to stop being yours. In September 2026, Google will block every Android app whose developer hasn't registered with them.

                                  125 days until lockdown

Starting September 2026, a silent update, nonconsensually pushed by Google, will block every Android app whose developer hasn't registered with Google, signed their contract, paid up, and handed over government ID.

Every app and every device, worldwide, with no opt-out.

@lproven re: "with no way to opt out" — i have seen a post which says there will be a *highly* convoluted way of opting out, which involves turning on developer mode and waiting 24 hours, but of course we won't really know until september.

@lproven A common misconception people have about their devices, the device, the physical hardware, is yours, the software is not.

Think of it like your house, you can own the house but you can’t own the land that it’s on. If you think you own it, don’t pay your property tax and see what happens.

If you're in the US swappa has supported Pixels in the price range you're looking for. The Pixel 8 pro I'm typing this from was 260 if you go back to a 7 you're golden

                                          Just a moment...
