Jesus fucking Christ, Cory, this is patently ridiculous.
He doesn't engage with Audre Lorde's actual intention & meaning. No, he brings up a Black woman thinker/writer/activist, assures us he knows how "smart" she was, & then dismisses her words out of hand without even superficial engagement by using a cute little analogy.
I'm not trying to nitpick: that is some real colonizer bullshit.
He lost me when he wouldn't acknowledge that his
use of LLM is problematic.

@artemis lol no need. Seems like this guy is on a streak of bad takes lately. Don’t know much about him other than he gave us the term enshitification which may be the most useful thing he ever does if he keeps this up.
is it, though?
all 'enshittification' actually is is a white person thinking he's clever for describing the race to the bottom that is a cornerstone of capitalism. we didn't need a word for that.

Doctorow is not one of those people who haven't had time to engage with more challenging ideas, nor does he have an excuse in the Year two thousand twenty & six for so flippantly dismissing a Black woman's perspective—a Black woman who lived under segregation for a good portion of her life—on how oppressed peoples can free themselves from oppression, not just physically but holistically rejecting the white supremacist kyriarchy in every way it manifests.
Oh, I guess the post is from 2025, not 2026, so that's much better, obviously. I'm sure he's learned a lot since then.

I guess "thoughtless" is the new look for influencers who are self-destructing

@artemis@dice.camp Like Cory, in my edgy 20's I made a similar - though much deeper - counter argument of Lorde's assertion. Then I thought deeper and performed more self and systemic reflection and corrected myself. The problem with Cory's statement is that he flippantly doesn't understand the breadth of what the Master's Tools are (eg. capitalism, racism, sexism, etc) and thus second order tools (eg. AI, corporate operations, liberal regulatory frameworks) which all rest well within the Toolbox. It's simply a bad, dumb take which is suited to a liberal mind that believes they both understand and can fix the systemic problems of our culture, while maintaining their own power and influence.

@artemis "well *I* could use the master's tools" yeah that's because you're a white guy and you only want to partially dismantle it
You can't use the master's tools because either he gave them to you or he used them to oppress and enslave you, and either way they are ineffective or they are immoral.
The statement is intended to make you think critically about power itself. In that way it's fundamentally anarchist in nature.

@VulpineAmethyst Hahaha fair point. We all did feel that was what was happening before he coined that term.
-
@artemis did he even understand what she said. what she said is tied closely to race and various other marginalizations. jesus christ cory, this isn't it
@mynameistillian @artemis he did not, in fact, understand a single word she wrote.
I'm sure he was very impressed that he read Lorde, and will have been told how impressed other people around him are.

@artemis bad bad vibes from that particular nerd since like 2005 tbh. The whole BoingBoing crew have aged like a wide selection of dairy produce.

@artemis So basically the guy's saying "the metaphor illustrating this concept is incorrect therefore the idea must be incorrect."
That's a well-known technique used to deflect attention from the real issue when you have no argument.

Especially since it's wrong, like really wrong, like past missing the point he knows he's wrong and just wants to fool people into being slaves. Actual bullshit!
Audre: the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house
Some putz: There is no toolset better suited to conduct an orderly dismantling of a structure than the tools that built it.
Anyone with half a brain: But then they're not the master's tools. They're the slave's tools. So slaves should sieze the means of their master's production?
Some putz: uhhhh noooo they should stay slaves and masters will dismantle their own house... voluntarily. ...Reagan... -

@VulpineAmethyst @sayonaraminasan @artemis
White guys who think they've overall benefitted from capitalism needed a word that described how it affected them.

@artemis
Yeah I had that thought too once upon a time. Then I read and learned more about slavery, and I realized that the master's tools are the whip, the koffel, the gun, etc. -
