George Dow, a Syrian Christian immigrant, was initially denied citizenship because the court did not consider Syrians “white persons” under the Naturalization Act of 1790. On appeal, the Fourth Circuit ruled that Syrians—along with other "Western Asiatics" were part of the #Caucasian race and thus eligible for citizenship.
