As a 5th-century saint, St. Patrick was roughly contemporary with King Arthur. Some legends say the saint left Britain for Ireland during the reign of Ambrosius, Arthur's uncle. An adder stone (or hag stone) is a stone, usually glassy, with a naturally occurring hole in it. It was believed in Celtic Britain that the stones were the hardened saliva produced by a large mass of serpents. So much did they complain that Moses turned to God to plead on their behalf. God told Moses to speak to the rock, and it would give them water.But rather than speak to the rock, Moses hit it with his staff. There are different interpretations of this: Did Moses lack faith? Was this about showmanship, not wanting to be seen talking to a rock? Or perhaps he was simply confused or didn't hear the instructions properly because of the loud complaining.In any case, water sprung from the rock, enough for the tribe to drink. But the water was bitter - a punishment either for Moses or for all the Israelites, take your pick.@AimeeMaroux
