We tried Borscht Kitchen restaurant for lunch today. Tiny spot, near College and Bathurst. Intriguingly, when you walk in, they ask if you want the sushi menu or the Ukrainian menu. A bit like going to the (now closed) Hungary Thai restaurant in Kensington market. I had kvas to drink for the first time. Really liked it. It tasted a bit like beer and a bit like juice, and a bit like rootbeer. Looking it up, I see there's similarities with kombucha, but made with grain instead of tea. The food was quite good. Reminds me of homemade. Few people eating in the restaurant, but a steady stream of delivery people coming in and out. Other patrons seemed to be speaking Ukrainian.I enjoyed reading this profile of the owner, who came to Toronto in 2019 to study computer engineering. I didn't know Ukrainian sushi was a thing. But of course it is; restaurants continually adapt dishes to fit with available ingredients and local preferences.https://torontolife.com/food/sort-of-secret-borscht-kitchen-ukrainian-harbord-village/#Toronto #BorschtKitchen
