Garlic report. May 31, 2026. The raised vegetable garden, of 2005 was expanded with this raised bed, of 2022. The garlic, onions, and leek family have a three year crop rotation. These are nodig gardens. I see one lotus garlic growing a late May scape. The tomatoes, climbing beans, and cucumbers have sheep wire style fencing. The perennials in the vegetable garden are giant hyssop and comfrey. The comfrey is blooming now till November. #gardening, #allotment, #nodig, #minnesota, #pollinators

Around here it is forbidden to plant bamboo as it spreads like wildfire and is virtually indestructible. So my cuttings are in the pond, not outside around it.Been chopping weeds by hand, just a section before I roasted, can't use the machine as with this infernal heat the engine might size, as it did last year.Indoors pinto beans are trying to escape through the gaps in the roof, two of the 24 butter beans also, black beans yeah, strawberries also and they need slug defences.Watering now. It’s good to see the bees have been and are busy. The main bee hotel is almost full.Various bumblebees and solitary bees have been pollinating the available flowers on the plot this afternoon. From field and broad beans, comfrey, alliums, soft fruit and flowers. #Gardening #Pollinators #Bees #Allotment

Greenhouse update: We got the okra started today, (Had to eat a lot of Lemon-ice to get the pots to recycle!). Also the corn is sprouting (5 days) and the cucumbers and squash are starting to appear (4 days). Won't be long before stuff can go out into the ground. Busy times! Had a samara from a silver maple (Acer saccharinum) blow in from somewhere. Sent it on it's way. Don't need it growing with the squash.#Gardening #allotment #NewEngland #Zone6b

@richrollgardener Some varieties just do that more than others. It makes no difference to the crop. My rhubarb does the same and I’m picking from it every week.

At this point I seem to have lost the ability to take in-focus photos of flying creatures. A quick trip to the #allotment between hail and showers.

Sitting here for ten minutes and seeing the bumble bees on the woad and hearing the birdsong in the trees was by far the best bit of my day. #Gardening #Allotment

The hot compost pile was at 66°C/151F today so it’s had three days over 65°C. Two days at that temperature is sufficient to kill weed seeds and pathogens.10 litres of rainwater and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) diluted 1:1000 was added to the pile.The pile had its first turn, outside to in.Within an hour of turning it had heated up from 53°C/137F to 59°C/138F. The pile should remain above 55°C/131F for the next three days when it will be turned again. #Compost #Composting #SolarPunkSunday
