The outcome is actually faster to load than the original simple holder. Just put the spool center piece in the spool and drop it in place. The big center piece prevents any unwanted movement and the filament feed is now butter smooth! I didn't even need extra parts, I reused the bearings that were at the bottom of the case. I believe they had originally intended to get away with just the cylindrical piece, but that caused rocking motion which again made the spool hit the box sides. They had then added 2 small rollers at the bottom to try to prevent that. Now those are reused in a lot better working design.#3dprinting #mods

This week's #freecadfriday project, the first working prints finished today.I use Polymaker's Polydryer boxes, that are silica gel boxes that can be just dropped onto their dryer machine without taking the spool out. While it's a decent product, the spool hub has annoyed me for a long time about them. There's just this plastic cylinder that goes there and while it's passable with plastic filament spools, it introduces noticeable drag on the cardboard ones that most of mine are these days.I set out to find a way to modify them to get rid of this nasty misfeature.#3dprinting

One of the major things I've been wanting to do is to turn this general junk pile shelf into a 3D printing material storage. I originally planted the Prusa Mini there and it fit there like a glove.There's however several things I could see improved here and this was a good spot to do some upgrades.The shelf is probably from the late 70s, so it's heavy and sturdy as hell, but I printed 4 brackets out of PA and bolted the shelf onto the brick wall with them. It was already stable, now it's really, REALLY stable!

@julie Yeah, I didn't bother thinking about it too much after the cardboard fixed it. I had a small band of bad quality surface at the bottom of parts. Maybe the part started wobbling in sync with the wobbling of the machine when it grew high enough. Or maybe it was because of the change in center of gravity when the bed went down. No idea.

These planes are a rare case of just for a fun of it prints as I mostly tend to make parts for repairs and other purely functional stuff.This Boeing 737-800 follows the Airbus A320-CEO I did couple of years ago. I made probably every possible mistake with it, the biggest being installing a printer upgrade and then doing a 72 hour print job expecting the printer would've kept its configuration and settings as it had always done. Except in this case it lost all of its fine tuning and made really ugly prints. The only saving grace was that this model is so big the imperfections aren't that visible from the intended viewing distance when this are hanging from the roof.I'll try to learn from those mistakes in this one.

@weetwo I hope to dispel the idea that 3D printing is still something of a geek thing making things just for the sake of trying to justify the existence of 3D printers. I see I still have some PR work to do, considering how often Youtube videos for example result in comments like "that will never last".After learning basic CAD skills I've finally reached a spot where I can recreate pinball parts that have not either been manufactured for a long time or the current era replicas are just cheap crap. Plus I always like to put my own spin on them to not just copy something. Naturally I too share all the models I've made.I've been following the 3D printing lockdown with frustrated disbelief. It's yet another thing where people who don't understand technology are trying to lock it down in ways that only make it awkward for the honest users and stop absolutely zero criminals doing questionable stuff with the printers. Besides, the whole "oh no, they're printing guns" is such a lame excuse, like you couldn't create guns with a CNC lathe/router or literally any other million ways.

@emily I remember hearing a lot of debate about it, from the added CF being detrimental in some materials (like PLA) and with minor benefits with others. I also came across a printer that had separate CF filament, so the fibers would be long. Curious to see your real life experience with it.

@SecretAntelope I just gave up with the cheap ones. Most of them worked for a while and then started doing weird stuff, most commonly powering off from the slightest bump.I fought enough with 5€ Aliexpress finds and eventually got a proper one and have not regretted it.

@eff The other issue is that you can print a "gun" with all the necessary parts but for it to actually work, you need the right materials. Meanwhile, a realistic looking, non-functional, replica could be quite useful as a theatrical prop. If made out of a soft plastic, it might not be capable of being fired and if you did get the explosive to detonate, it would possibly just explode in your hand.
