Morning is coming earlier every day.
Getting to the trail early helps us avoid the crowds.
A couple of days ago the same person who brings three large off leash German shepherds to the trail cut us off from our car. This is our third encounter and I feel like his dogs are dangerous. The most aggressive one knocked me down to try to reach Summer the first time we met.
This time I blew my whistle to alert the owner who wasn't paying attention and let him know that if his dogs didn't back down I would pepper spray them. I also said that I had taken a photo of his Minnesota license plate and if Summer or I were hurt I would see him in court. He said the dogs were reacting to my fear. I said he needs to keep them on leash because they don't obey him.
He said that we shouldn't use the trail in the afternoons. I am complying because I don't want Summer to get hurt.
So here we are at the crack of dawn.
    Cold but safe.

@NorcalGma2 Reminds me of the time I was attacked by a "service animal" (large shiny black dog with a spiked collar) at the farmers market. I was belittled because "it was just being friendly."

I agree. The dogs are beautiful and are each a different color. They are very aggressive though and don't pay any attention to his commands. They outweigh Summer and I by a lot.

@NorcalGma2 Good for you for making your stance clear to the shepherd owner. As a former shepherd owner, I'm angry to hear such a comment from him! What a jerk. But we enjoy seeing Summer on the empty beach anyway! Thank you for the photos!

@NorcalGma2 I think the internet is having some major problems this morning. I'm randomiy having sites not open, and then a few minutes later they will. The link goes to a form you can report people living in CA with out of state plates. One of my pet peeves. You want to live here and use our roads, then pay your taxes.

I've had similar. He reckons his dog is just being friendly when it has its bared teeth on my dogs neck. The attitude is what gets me the most. No one else has complained, he said. I've spoken to people since who say him and his dog are a menace.

I encountered him the first time over a year ago and he has clearly renewed his registration in Minnesota because it is valid until July of 2027. I will try the site again. It's possible he is working here. He doesn't appear to be retirement age. He is a jerk and doesn't seem to care if the dogs act aggressive.

@NorcalGma2 His attitude is beyond belief! *You* shouldn't use the area in the afternoons because *he* won't control his dogs??? Outrageous. German shephers are gorgeous, but they are powerful and need good training and to be kept under control. I'd definitely report him. Good luck!

@NorcalGma2 What a jerk. I'm sorry some people are like that. I don't walk Rosie (a Belgian Malinois who is often mistaken for a German Shepherd) because my husband didn't stay consistent in training her on a leash and she doesn't always listen to me - it's not worth the risk to me even with her on leash. I wish more dog owners thought more in those terms.

I am assuming these dogs are German Shepherds but I don't know my dog breeds. One is classic tanish and black coloring, one a beautiful gray and one black. They appear the same size. Very large. I immediately thought that they were probably expensive dogs. They are all aggressive but one gets very close and terrifies Summer who puts her tail and ears down and stays between my legs shaking like a leaf. These dogs are the only reason I carry a can that makes a loud noise and pepper spray on this trail. I did tell the Wildlife refuge staff and provided a copy of his license plate.

@madgeface @NorcalGma2 I hate crappy owners of dogs and their wild sense of entitlement. I, too, carry pepper spray because some poorly socialized dogs have come after Jimmy. It shouldn’t have to be that way.

@NorcalGma2 I feel so bad that these dogs and their irresponsible owner are who they are. I'm glad you reported them and very glad you're well-prepared. Here's a picture of Rosie, just for reference. She was the runt of the litter and only weighs 62 lbs. She also has hip dysplasia, which we discovered when she was 6 months old, so she's on the small side and also isn't as good a jumper as the breed suggests.

                                          @NorcalGma2

He needs to train his dogs so they don't react to other people and other dogs. He is responsible for his dogs' actions and reactions. That's the bottom line. If he chooses to shirk that responsibility, you and Summer are wise to avoid him.
