As far as I can fathom, it's a social media myth. Any differences between genders are slight either way, or non-existent as far as I've seen. The biggest differences seem to be between age groups, with older people generally being less lonely.

I don’t think loneliness in the US is a social media myth.
Kids and young adults are looking for companionship in AI! for example.
US society is individualistic, tribalistic, and exclusionary, and technology has made it worse.
Kids, for example, learn how to interact with others by playing, but there is much less playing time these days with schedules full of activities.
And the job environment is not better, full of surface interactions only. -

Another huge target market for them is young men on the autism spectrum, who are just doing a web search on 'how to date women'
(And of course it is also true that the manosphere is about teaching men to victimize women, and that part of how we fight back against that is by making fun of it)
