ok so we went to check out #Hawrelak Park here in #yeg for the first time after it reopened.

Yes there is still a lot of blank open space, BUT I was positively surprised on the whole? They added an entire separate walking/MUP loop on the inside of the old driving loop. They also added wayfinding, plus more human-scale landscaping.

    And that playground was BUSY!!

@robyn We’re headed down there today with my father and his mobility scooter. He’s very excited.

@robyn The upgrades are pretty great! Big, empty spaces are kind of the point of most public parks. The MUP around the road and the one that cuts across the park diagonally are excellent for walkers and rollers. The playground is excellent, and all of the buildings have great upgrades. Picnics, festivals, and training for distance can all resume, as well as skating and skiing in the winter. #YEG

@robyn I drove around a couple weeks ago and it looked great...can't wait to ride around and get into the nitty gritty...have spent many hours in the park and look forward to it again!

@Chigaze I think it'll be great! Access for humans has been much improved I find. Finally people walking, rolling, skating don't have to mix with vehicles anymore 🙌

@robyn His big worry was about bird habitat but he's taken a drive around and is mostly relieved there. He can't go down on his outside of driving around as he can't walk far and can't load and unload his scooter. Should be an interesting excursion.

@robyn @Chigaze oh, yay!! Maybe I’ll find my way over there sometime soon. 💕 I hope it has enough benches along the paths for frequent stops/rest?

@britt This is a good question. The city website talks a lot about how accessible the park now is, including the "rest nodes" along the walking paths, but it doesn't actually specify anywhere how frequent the benches are. 100m? 500m? Different people need different frequencies of rest!

                  https://www.edmonton.ca/activities_parks_recreation/parks_rivervalley/william-hawrelak-park

But at least that particular path is open enough that you can probably see ahead & decide if you've got the energy to make the next one.

@AmeliasBrain @robyn @Chigaze Thank you for this!! Yes, accessible is so different for every individual, I imagine they just went with whatever they were recommended when designing things. I’ll head out that way in the coming weeks and see how it goes.

@britt @AmeliasBrain @Chigaze If memory serves, I'd say it's closer to every 500m vs every 100. The whole loop seems to be 2.4k and I think I recall four to five of these nodes? (Memory is a funny thing though, so 😬)

That said, the new diagonal path with the "Community League Space" or whatever its actual name is (which is very nice) shortens the loop significantly, and it also has seating areas.

AND they actually put useful wayfinding signs!!

                      Anyways hope this helps 😅

@robyn @AmeliasBrain @Chigaze thanks, friends!! I’m super dooper shy otherwise I might recommend a get together at the park. Baby steps? 😉

My wife reminded me that she can carry a small blanket and a lil camping chair in a bag for me, so if needed, we can rest anytime.
