Uhhhh so I get early access to the mount Rainier wilderness permits this month. Obviously I'd love to do the wonderland trail but know very little about it. When? Starting from where? What are some alternate trips if I can't get my preferred?

@intrepidhero I hiked a couple sections last summer and it was awesome. There are multiple places to start. I was around the White River area.

@killyourfm @andrewbriscoe Give me date ranges I will absolutely do it.

I was thinking mid-August and 7 days. First impression is that it's going to average 14ish miles and +/-6000' a day. I already see multiple side quests I want to take. 😁

My early access timeslot is on the 25th, 4 days after the earliest. We'll see how much competition that means.

Roughly 90 miles and famously 22,000' of elevation. (145km and 6700m)

There are several places where you can make it longer and/or more rugged with alternate routes. I favor the ones that would keep me closest to mountain and at the higher elevations, meaning theoretically more views.

There are 3 main starting points (and numerous more obscure ones): White River/Sunrise on the NE, Longmire/Paradise on the SW, and Mowich/Carbon River on the NW. Unfortunately the Carbon River bridge is permanently closes. Access to Longmire is closed due to a slide right now but hopefully that will be cleared by summer.

Folks often target 6-8 days for the trip. You can mail resupply packages to the park and pick them up Mowich Patrol Cabin (maybe not with road closed?) Longmire Information Center, Sunrise Visitor Center, or White River Campground. I'm used to planning 7 days WITHOUT resupply so that's an interesting new option for me.

Possible side trips (as if the main trail isn't enough) include Paradise, Spray Park, Carbon Glacier, Burroughs Mountain, and Little Tahoma.

As per my usual I'm mapping trail segments in CalTopo. I'll probably add more detail as I research.

Favoring the higher elevation routes means a higher chance of crossing snow fields. So traction is recommended.

Surprisingly, bear canisters are NOT required in the park, but recommended. The established campsites are supposed to have bear poles. But I tend to just bring my canister whenever in bear country.
