    @cmconseils

    I would rather have a sheet of paper printed on an inkjet.

      @cmconseils Yes. Stop making me use my phone when I just want to sit down and eat some fajitas.

        @cmconseils I refuse to pay for a place that makes me use my phone and always ask for a hard copy of their menu.

          @cmconseils The cost of a cheap inkjet printer and some no-name inks is probably less than your menu service.

            You actually triggered a whole imaginary conversation in my flip-phone-carrying brain. "You don't want my business? Just because I refuse to carry a distraction rectangle? WTF?"

              @cmconseils Pretend you have a year 2000 Nokia and ask if you can order there or in the restaurant on the other side of the street.

                  @NickSchwanck @cmconseils I mean, that's kind of the system we've been stuck in. You wanted restaurants for convenience, but they screw you. So you give up the convenience to make your own, but the food sellers are Oh So Bad™. You can try growing your own, but you'll have to get the right seeds and then deal with all that, so you've gone from the convenience of just trying to get some food to spending months growing and tending a garden.

                  It's better if you can do it, but not everyone as a whole can and they count on that.

                  I guess I just really miss back when people would put their collective foot as a society down against bad things. Now everyone just caves if there is the slightest inconvenience so this happens.

                  (And yeah, I do not have the answers on this. I sure wish that I did.)

                  I see this caving as childish. People need to fucking grow up. In the US, at least, I feel like I'm surrounded by middle schoolers busy pretending to be adults.

                  And calling them "middle school" is being generous.

                      @Uair @NickSchwanck @cmconseils We live not in an apathetic society as one might think, but outright antipathetic.

                      I do find it ironic that people are taught to hate the concept of laziness in any form and to apply it to anyone they see as not working hard enough, yet they're actually the ones who avoid effort — even just the bare minimum — in anything where they can fight to avoid it. (Expending more effort to avoid effort. If that isn't laziness I don't know what is.)

                      I think the biggest problem of all is people really really do not like to think.

                          @cmconseils this is why we'd rather travel to country pubs still.

                          The most recent pub/hotel we stayed at in Awabakal (Newcastle New South Wales Australia) still had a counter for ordering food (breakfast lunch and dinner), the pokies were out the back through the beer garden away from the rest of the venue, the sports tv's were in the front bar and the 'restaurant' side was its own seperate area too in the back bar... One of the best pub hotels we've stayed at 🙌

                            @nazokiyoubinbou

                            It's been my experience that the vast majority of us simply walk around looking for ever-better choices to do their thinking for them. I can count on one hand how many people I've met who actually do their own thinking. Mostly they just regurgitate calibrated phrases put out by professional persuaders.

                            If I hear something like "Sleepy Joe" out of you, I write you off as an extension of someone else's mind and, sadly, someone who lopped off a big bit of their own humanity.

                              @cmconseils I was willing to do this during the pandemic. Since then, I just leave if the restaurant forces me to order with some app. I have stopped going to several #Portland restaurants entirely who continue the practice.

                                      @cmconseils Why does no one use NFC tags? At least then you don’t have to fight the camera.

                                      Still terrible compared to what has worked for… all time until recently.

                                        @cmconseils I make them get me a menu... saying that scams using QR codes are common, so will not scan them.

                                          @cmconseils there seem to be lots of people agreeing with you, but I don't dislike it, at least at the places I go.

                                          FWIW I _can_ browse the menu without starting an order, and I have the option of going to the bar and ordering instead of I want to.

                                          But they're not asking me to install Yet Another Goddam App, and I'm paying with the same bank card that I would use at the bar anyway so there's very little difference in terms of privacy. What's not to like?
