@NicksWorld @MariahL @Kingslayer I do know of cases where uber drivers saw the blind person with their cane and drove away. It still happens because ableism but you are right it is less than what someone with a dog gets.

@NicksWorld @MariahL @Kingslayer I don't recall recommending staying in your house 🙂 Frankly, I don't even recommend considering the extra work when you're doing stuff, though I know some people would disagree. What I do myself is to know that's a factor for most people. I can't pretend it's not.

@techsinger @NicksWorld @MariahL @Kingslayer The thing I do recommend is to pay forward. If you find a lot of people going out of their way, being inconvenienced, making exceptions, paying for gas, etc., etc., for you, make it a point of helping the next person who could use a hand up. You don't need to grovel with gratitude, just quietly be grateful by giving to someone else what someone else has given you, albeit maybe in a different form.

@NicksWorld @Kingslayer @MariahL @vol4life8657 It's all about your priorities and nobody has the same priorities as the next person. So if you dislike confrontation, and you don't want to spend the money then absolutely you should stick with a cane. I am going to have a different scent of priorities because I also have a different set of disabilities and a different life experience. So for me, it is worth it 1000 times over.

@techsinger @MariahL @Kingslayer When I go out, I don't even consider the amount of work I make people do because I go out and have fun. Yes, I know I make people do theings they wouldn't normally do but at the end of the day, I'm not just gonna stay in my house to make other people ffeel comfortable. At that point, you might as well put me in a mental hospital.

@NicksWorld @Kingslayer The white cane isn't a one size fits all thing, though. It's not as simple as that, Nick. I've had a guide dog and even though I had plenty of problems, the way we moved was so freeing. With a cane when you encounter an obsticle the cane hits it. A dog will either show you what the obsticle is or just take you around it. Being able to just move with that sort of fuidity was amazing. I honestly hate my cane sometimes. I don't have the speed of movement that I used to have, but also a dog can break the ice in social situations. The white cane has a lot of unspoken stigmas attached to it. When I worked at a summer camp for kids with disabilities back in 2017 I got so much more from people because of my dog. My friend who was a cane user struggled in social situations where I did not. Sure I can chalk half of his struggles to his social skills not being the best, but really, it was because I had a dog and we both knew it.

@MariahL @NicksWorld @Kingslayer Just curious, what's wrong with the cane hitting the obstical? I've been a cane user all my life and yes, it can hit things, or sometimes people, but that's what it's supposed to do.

I was just explaining to Nick about the priorities that people have and how different people will choose differently. I honestly wish fewer people would work with Guide dogs mostly because I think a lot of people do it for very wrong reasons and they don't actually realize how much work and effort goes into this relationship.

@Kingslayer @vol4life8657 @MariahL @NicksWorld @pawpower For me, I've met a few people who, well, I don't think they should have a guide dog. They were't well groomed, one of them that just came out of training decided to sniff my butt. The dog, not the person. Anyway I know I wouldn't be good with a dog. A dog needs to move around and go places. I go to work, mainly sit at a desk, and go home. That ain't enough movement to keep a dog happy and trained.
