Whelp, I bought a new trumpet
-
@lydiaconwell nothing. I bought a better one
@lydiaconwell I had a student model, in good shape, really not a bad horn at all, but the sound is just ok, some of the notes are uneven, and the build quality is also just ok.
I got a professional model, much more even sound from bottom to top, MUCH easier to play, and importantly it leans towards the kind of sound I want to make - warm, overtones, a little diffuse around a nice core. It really feels like it fits me and wants to make the sounds I want to make
-
@DuchessOfSnork @lydiaconwell Nice to know this trend extends outside of the guitar world
@RyanHyde @lydiaconwell I am finding there are disturbing similarities between guitarists and trumpet players

@DuchessOfSnork @RyanHyde @lydiaconwell Disturbing?

@elsemusic @RyanHyde @lydiaconwell It was meant to be a joke about wanting to acquire more and more instruments

@lydiaconwell And it is also a bit aspirational. I'm still very much a student and don't really need a new horn. But it does represent something about how I want to play, and I hope I can grow into it. I want to grow into it. And I've been far more consistent about studying trumpet than I have for almost anything else I've tried. I've proven to myself I will put in the work.
Or maybe it's a shiny bauble and I'm rationalizing it?

@oheso @lydiaconwell Thank you! This particular one was definitely an easier play than my Holton. Not all of the pro horns I tried were. Some were downright challenging! This horn hit a real sweet spot of playability and sound, I just couldn't pass it up!

@DuchessOfSnork @oheso Yes, it's a common thing with 'student' or entry level equipment. I suppose the student price range is there for parents so they don't have to spend too much for something their child might get bored of.
But with pretty much everything, the more expensive range sound better or behave better and give better results and are generally easier to use.
It makes me think that professionals are mostly just students with better equipment.
From what I've read, you seem very happy with it.

@lydiaconwell @oheso That all makes sense to me. I don't want to spend a lot on pro gear for a child or beginner who may move on to to something else in a month. Or not care for it properly. And of course some can't afford more expensive gear.
But I suspect if you could pair every student with a quality instrument, they would learn quicker and tend to stick with it longer. Just a guess.
I can't wait to practice tomorrow!!!

@DuchessOfSnork @julian ooooo pretty!!
