@SylvieLorxu is there a point to all this? Why now? Why the sudden clutching at pearls?

@humanhorseshoes Right wing "protect the children" (aka: "control the flow of information and censor anything remotely queer") nonsense is what it feels like to me. It seems to have started in the US.

As someone who has been programming since being a young teenager, things like this make me enormously sad.

If I was banned from being part of tech communities until the age of 16 or even 18 I would've never been able to learn all I did. I would've never been able to truly get into FOSS.

I would've never had a chance to become who I now am.

Age verification is literally killing the ability for kids and teens to excitedly participate and learn cool stuff and learn how to have digital agency.

@SylvieLorxu the last paragraph should add "for adults" too because everyone grows up and it impacts them long-term. I think this part is important to push into readers subcon.

@SylvieLorxu what will happen is you verify in your home state, then again in the next one you go to, then the next, come back, re register in the next state, re register again over and over and over again.

Or you could just be non EU and skip all the rules like Americans avoid tax in Europe

@SylvieLorxu I started to code when I was 12 and I learned the most from the kind people on my local BBS.

We had an user meetup in '99. About a decade after I joined.

The BBS had moved to a message board on a http server by than.

The owner/operater of the BBS passed away in 2003 and most of the regulars are gone now as well.

Anyways back at that meetup I was, by far, the youngest person present.

I had taken my Dad along because he also wanted to meet the people who have been rather influential in my early life in person.

They all mistook him for me 🤣

Edit: I should add that my Dad can not code and is still alive and well. Turning 81 next Month.

@SylvieLorxu @ariadne @nik my trajectory would be wildly different (for the worse) if I couldn't be on LinuxQuestions.org forum forever ago, being a clueless kid exploring linux and learning it all. (and learning some netiquette along the way... something that seems to be absent a lot more these days..)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_groups_of_the_European_Parliament <-- for thouse of you not from the EU or not interrested in the Parlament here's a quick table to what is what.

Sadly S&D, the Social Democrats usually fail to see what's going on but at least they can be woken up by a loud public kick in the ass.

@SylvieLorxu Same. I wrote my first line of code in Visual Basic around age 8 or 9 under the guidance of my grandfather, then started to fiddle around on my own computers when I was 10 yo. I then continued to learn programming online as a teenager, followed by a full migration to linux.

I can't imagine how different my life would have been if I had to wait 10 more years before learning so much about computers.

@humanhorseshoes @SylvieLorxu the site says it's temporary unreachable but the link works fine here for me so it is in dead illegal geoblocking.

@TheOneDoc @SylvieLorxu If she is the answer it was a very stupid question to begin with. She has her analog here in Ireland, Patrick O'Donovan who has been on the same censorship hobby horse for years.

I would never call him stupid as that would be an insult to the stupid

As someone who has been programming since being a young teenager, things like this make me enormously sad.

If I was banned from being part of tech communities until the age of 16 or even 18 I would've never been able to learn all I did. I would've never been able to truly get into FOSS.

I would've never had a chance to become who I now am.

Age verification is literally killing the ability for kids and teens to excitedly participate and learn cool stuff and learn how to have digital agency.

@SylvieLorxu as a teacher I really enjoyed (and in fact used) the interest of my students in programming and encouraged them to do so as best I could. [I have just about no programming skills.] They became quite capable well before 13 years of age.

@humanhorseshoes @SylvieLorxu at this point I'm convinced the "conservatism" is a kind of cognitive disorder.
