Is AI Profitable Yet?
Tracking the debts and profits of frontier AI companies (May 2026).
<- TL;DR: LOL, no!
P.S. I suspect, but cannot prove, that the reported revenue here is at least 10x too optimistic.

@lproven Sora had a ratio of more than 1000x between cost and revenue....

@lproven Not sure, my colleagues are paying for the subscription for about a year now. So I would believe that a lot of people in genera are paying directly or indirectly.
For example, if you buy a certain smartphone, you'll get a subscription for a year with one of the AI services. And I'm sure this is at least partially compensated by the manufacturer.
It adds up quickly - just look at the revenue of Netflix, for example.
What does not make too much sense to me is how small openAI is compared to basically anyone else...

@lproven There's probably not a huge qualitative difference to the business between revenue at 10% of spend and revenue at 1% of spend.

Ah, but consider...
* We _know_ they are lying.
What it can do, what it will, what it is, how much it costs, the future growth, the planned expansion... all categorical lies. Assume an order of magnitude. Maybe 2.
Also on the costs.
Add 1-2 more OOM.
Also on charges. 1 or 2 OOM.
"Pretty soon you're talking about real money."

@lproven one of the sources:

I saw $1.7B cost for $1.2M revenue, which is quite the same ratio. -
