A person I never met, yet I still mourn his passing, for his works brought joy and comfort to myself and millions of others. Not to mention, as a teenager, a foundational education in society, politics, justice, and puns.
@Odaeus Wish I met him, even once.

I had the privilege to meet him once, after seeing him speak. He was great.

I shouldn't be surprised that Mastodon is comprised of a large number of Pratchett fans, but I am touched.

@Odaeus I started (re-)reading the whole Discworld series (in order of publication) last year. I'm about halfway through and this was such a good idea. I had read some when I was younger but I was very depressed at the time and my brain was not functioning properly. Plus I read them in French and now I can read the original text ! It's quite different ! I'm having the greatest time. The reading was prompted by my discovery of The Annotated Files (on L-Space), which was mentioned in a very very long Tumblr post about Vimes/The Watch and the Witches, similarities and differences.
Also I'm now old enough I think, to really get what Sir PTerry was putting in his books. The DEPTH.
A French artist/writer, Jacques Deval, (from whom I have read or seen absolutely nothing) said that "A good book is one which we always find full after emptying it". I think these are truly books you could read and read and read again and every time you'd notice something new, or understand something in a new way. A marvelous gift. -

@Odaeus @WizardOfDocs I was lucky enough to meet him once. An amazing man who was always surrounded by a bunch of enthusiastic neurodivergent people. Never felt so welcome then or since.

I like your hat, Sir Terry.
Happy birthday.

They are a marvellous gift indeed!

To add to the barebones story, I met Terry Prattchett during a book signing session. We had an exchange that could have been in one of his books.
TP: you look familiar. Have we met before?
Me: no, but you met my sister.
TP: does she look like you?
Me: not really.That was a long time ago, and I am paraphrasing to an extent, but it stuck with me!

@Odaeus I met him. In a field which almost certainly wasn't that one but looked very much like it. With the hat of course.

@Odaeus Does a book-signing count as meeting?

Everyone who came to love Terry Pratchett was shaped thereby. It's not hard to tell, this is a person who knows and has opinions about Granny Weatherwax
